Photo Doggies For Anthony Is Easily The Best Thing On The Internet Right Now
If your Facebook newsfeed has been exploded with pictures of dogs, directed to a guy named Anthony, you may be wondering, ‘WTF?!?!‘
Unless, that is, you're me. In which case, you thought (with a twang of jealousy): ‘Who is Anthony, and why are people sending him dog pictures?! How do I get people to send me dog pictures?'
Either way, the pictures are adorable. Even better? They're being posted for a good cause.
People across the world are sending pictures of their dogs (and even some cats) to a 16-year-old teenager in Arizona named Anthony who is battling leukemia, all because of a Facebook event created by a friend of the boy's mother. Photo Doggies for Anthony‘s event description explains that Anthony, who is being treated at Phoenix Children's Hospital, enjoys ‘doggy visits' also known as pet therapy sessions. For the days he does not get said doggie visits, Roberta Lucero-Koron, a friend of Anthony's mother, asks that individuals post photos of their own dogs online to help him smile. The event description reads:
Hi all, my friend Kristen Lyons has her son Anthony at Phoenix Childrens hospital. Some days he gets doggy visits and some he does not. They make him smile. I thought if I create this event, you can post a picture of your dog to help make him smile. His mom shows them to him and he smiles.
Since the event was created in late December, more than 620,000 Facebook users have shared doggy photos to help cheer up Anthony—and the numbers are steadily climbing. Submitters are asked to post the name of their dog, and where they are from. Often, individuals also post a funny tidbit about their dog, or their pup's hobbies and interests (like cuddling, giving kisses, drooling, begging for treats, etc).
Kristen Lyons (Anthony's mother) and Lucero-Koron post updates on Anthony's current conditions, as well as thank those submitting doggy photos for their unwavering support. One update reads, ‘Anthony is smiling because of you.'
Yeah, that makes two of us, Anthony.
This page is definitely the best thing on the Internet—and is probably the one thing I don't hate about Facebook right now. Not only can I appreciate it because I love dogs, but it's a great way to unite people for a good cause. Despite the underbelly of life—shitty breakups, horrible diseases, a bad day at work, angry bosses and other day-to-day travesties—these pups can help make Anthony, me, and well, all of us, smile.
According to a January 2nd update, Anthony is in the hospital for more chemo therapy this week. So be sure to send lots of puppy pictures—and good thoughts, prayers, and crossed fingers—until he gets out.
