Well Being

The Golden Age

By  |

I have said it before and I will say it again: there is something to love about every age and stage in my own life and my children's lives. That being said, my favorite kid age and stage is 18 to 21 months. I know not everyone feels that way — I wouldn't expect them to — but for me and my kids, it's the golden age. I love this age.

My daughter turned 19 months old yesterday and l am enjoying her thoroughly. We just recently started going to toddler storytime at the library and we have the best time. She took a long time to be interested in books and she's a very physical child, so I thought she might run around the library and go crazy, but the opposite is true. She sits in my lap and takes everything in. She doesn't ask to nurse (as her oldest sister would have at that age) but she refuses to join in the songs and hand motions when the other kids do. It's only when we get home that she shakes her hands and expects me to sing, “I've got to shake, shake, shake my sillies out….” I think it's fantastic that she feels safe with me and I know it won't be long before she finds herself standing up and dancing with the rest of the kids.

That's not the only reason I love this age though. She has a wonderful ability to communicate through words, signs and gestures. Given the context it's easy to figure out whether “doc-doc” means “chocolate” or “jacket” and “doc” means “sock” or “clock.” My first child could sing the alphabet at this point (I have the audio to prove it) but I'm not worried. I am just enjoying every single moment of my daughter's development.

She gives the best hugs and kisses. If I asked one of her older sisters to kiss at this age, they'd refuse — I'd only get a kiss if they initiated it. It's fun to watch my youngest develop her own personality and her love for me and her sisters. Today she climbed up on the couch and gave her 5-year-old sister an unsolicited kiss. There's not much better than witnessing that!

I'm not sure how it turned out that 18-21 months manages to be such a fun age for all my children, but I am treasuring it. I am sure I will find something else to treasure as my youngest grows past that stage, but in the meantime, I plan to enjoy it!
