Ex-Olympic Runner Suzy Favor Hamilton Worked As An Escort (And No One Knows What To Say About It)

Former Olympic runner Suzy Favor Hamilton is all over the news today after The Smoking Gun uncovered that she's been working as a high-priced escort for an illegal Las Vegas company. And surprisingly, she's been quite vocal about fessing up to her work as a prostitute and apologizing for making “a huge mistake.” And while sex scandals aren't uncommon among sports stars, this one seems to have everyone gobsmacked, partially because the way she's handled it just makes it clear that the Suzy Hamilton escort story is probably really, really sad.

She went by the name “Kelly Lundy” as an escort, but Favor Hamilton told clients about her former career as a three time Olympic track runner, eventually tipping off The Smoking Gun.

The details of her situation are certainly scandal-worthy: she's 44 and has a seven-year old daughter with her husband, who she also has a successful real estate brokerage with in Madison, Wisconsin–and she also works giving motivational speeches and promotional work for companies like Disney's running series. But salacious as it is, it seems like everyone is having a hard time reacting with enthusiasm…which is kind of how the media should be reacting.

She told the Smoking Gun that she was ready to ‘fess up to her mistakes and apologize for them:

“I take full responsibility for my mistakes. I’m not the victim and I’m not going that route,” Favor Hamilton said. “I’m owning up to what I did. I would not blame anybody except myself.” She added, “Everybody in this world makes mistakes. I made a huge mistake. Huge.”

And over the course of today, she's been apologizing through her twitter account, explaining that she was involved in escort services because of personal issues and depression:

And given The Smoking Gun's evidence that her family has plenty of income through their other businesses, it's hard to imagine that Favor Hamilton is lying–or that she deserves more shame from the media than she's already feeling right about now.

She says her husband already knew about her work and was trying to get her to stop, but the public news can be nothing of short for their family.

While this type of story is ripe for mean media headlines and terrible misogynistic attacks (after all, the New York Times practically called Lolo Jones a prostitute, and all she did was promos for Red Bull). But surprisingly, no one seems to really know what to say about it. Which is probably because this is mostly just sad for Suzy Hamilton and her family.
