Sugar Is Turning You Into A Monster And Ruining Everything

scary sugarSugar is basically the nutritional bogeyman: it's lurking in your food waiting to murder you… or at least destroy everything you hold dear. Like that pretty face of yours.

The Huffington Post spoke with two dermatologists, Dr. Nicholas Perricone and Dr. Maryann Mikhail, to figure out just what sugar does to your skin and how you can avoid the horrific and life ruining damage.

Here are no-good things that can happen to your skin because of sugar:

AGING: Your body breaks down sugar into glucose, raising your insulin levels. When your insulin levels spike, your body gets what Dr. Perricone described to the Huffington Post as “a burst of inflammation throughout the body.” That inflammation makes your body produce enzymes that damage the collagen and elastin in your skin. Without healthy collagen and elastin, your face will mutate into a sagging, wrinkled old witch face that not even a mother could love. The process of sugar permanently attaching to your skin's collagen is called glycation, by the way.

COMPLEXION DEFECTIONS: Glycation, that process we just talked about, isn't just turning you into a withered old hag, but is also exacerbating your acne, rosacea and other skin conditions. You will have brought these disfiguring problems upon yourself due to your insatiable sugar cravings, you monster.

EXCESS HAIR GROWTH: According to the doctors the Huffington Post spoke to eating a lot of sugar raises your risk of developing insulin resistance “which can manifest as excess hair growth (hirsutism) and dark patches on the neck and in body creases” and you turn into a wolfman. Sorry.

For your face's sake, you should opt out of simple carbohydrates like white bread, tasty candy, pasta and what not; instead go for complex carbs like vegetables and brown rice that are broken down into glucose more slowly, preventing that face mutating insulin spike of doom. To promote beautiful skin and prevent hideousness, you also want to dine on “low-glycemic” foods that delay sugar absorption, anti-inflammatory foods like healthy fats and lean proteins, antioxidant-rich choices and high fiber eats. OR ELSE.

Or just use common sense and don't get hysterical. Taking nutrition, skincare and beauty seriously are all okay, just don't freak out.
