Starbucks Offers 2 For 1 Holiday Coffee…But Think Before You Drink

By  |

Starbucks has announced their “Buy One, Share One” promotion where you can get two cups of their specialty holiday beverages for the price of one. Hooray…at least we thought until we did a little research. Before you order one of these coffees, there are a few things you should know to make sure you're getting a healthier brew.

From today, November 15, to Sunday, November 18, between the hours of 2 to 5 p.m., you should stop by your local Starbucks and “catch up with a friend over a holiday beverage,” they say on their website. And, “when you buy one, we’ll give you a second one of equal or lesser value for free at participating stores.” You can choose from Caramel Brulee Latte, Peppermint Mocha, or Gingerbread Latte. All of which sound great…until you see what you're really drinking. Take a look:

Caramel Brulee Latteaccording to their site, a grande made with whole milk and whipped cream has a whopping 470 calories (nearly 25% of your daily recommended caloric intake if you're following an average 2,000 calories a day) and 17 grams of fat. But…if you order a “tall” with nonfat milk and no whip, you can get that down to 240 calories with no fat. A much better option.

Peppermint Mocha — this holiday drink (as delish as it is) contains 440 calories and 19 grams of fat when you order a grande with whole milk and whip. Yikes. And the “tall” nonfat version still has 290 calories and nine grams of fat, so be careful here. Maybe even ask for a “short.”

Gingerbread Latte — out of the three, this one is the best choice, but it's still not exactly healthy. A grande here will cost you 360 calories with 17 grams of fat. But knock that down to a “tall”, nonfat option and you can sip your way through just 220 calories and six grams of fat.

So by all means, enjoy the 2 for 1 special at Starbucks with a friend…just think before you drink by opting for the non-fat options.
