Rihanna Defends Chris Brown In Oprah Interview; Sends More Confusing Messages To Fans

By  |

This Sunday, Oprah Winfrey will share her highly-anticipated interview with Rihanna on OWN. One of the most interesting–and disturbing–highlights of this show includes Ri-Ri talking about Chris Brown (who is apparently back in her life), the abuse she suffered and how she wants all of us to believe he is not the monster everyone made him out to be. Right.

Just to reiterate the facts: The night before the 2009 Grammy Awards, Brown assaulted Rihanna, leaving her battered and bruised. He was later sentenced to a measly five years' probation, community service and one year of domestic-violence counseling.

Rihanna, now 24, came to Brown's defense by telling Oprah:

It was a weird, confusing space to be in. Because as angry as I was, as angry and hurt and betrayed, I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help and who's going to help him? Nobody's going to say he needs help. Everybody's going to say he's a monster without looking at the source, and I was more concerned about him.

She went on to say how the media only made things worse:

I lost my best friend. Everything I knew switched … switched in a night and I couldn't control that. So I had to deal with that, and that's not easy for me to understand or interpret. It's not easy to interpret on camera. Not with the world watching.

Certainly, it's not easy to understand where she is coming from. It's probably safe to assume that a lot of abuse victims want to defend their abuser and even go so far as to blame themselves, which is what she appears to be doing by saying that she was more concerned about him than herself.

Forgiveness is one thing, but by keeping Brown in her life, Rihanna is sending a dangerous message to other young women that domestic violence is something that can be worked through. I don't believe that. As Oprah herself always says, when someone shows you their true colors, believe them the first time.

What do you think? Do you agree that Rihanna appears to be defending Brown now?
