Prancercise, you guys. This amazing “fitness workout” created by Joanna Rohrback is “A springy, rhythmic way of moving forward, similar to a horse’s gait.” And you’ve got to see it to believe it.

Amazing, right? There are four main modes of Prancercise: Walking, Trotting, Gallop and the Shadowbox Prance. All except the last are done with ankle weights…Shadowbox Prance involves ankle weights on the hands.

Rohrback created Prancercise back in 1989 but due to years of health problems, didn’t really have the ability to publicize the workout she invented until just a few years ago. (The video above is from 2012.) In a charming, tongue-in-cheek (on the writer’s part, at least) interview with Miami NewTimes Cultist blog, Rohrback provides details on the whole history of Prancercise as well as some choice quotes:

“When I spoke with publishers, they wanted guaranteed market demand but I was doing everything by myself. No support, no husband, nothing. That made it like Mt. Everest so, rather than be depressed, I shelved it for several years.”

“I’m totally against horse racing and against all that. Let the horse enjoy its free will.”

“I don’t think about it. I feel like I look a little like a clydesdale. I don’t really care and I’m not concerned with how my hair looks. If I were shy, how could I prancercise?”

Rohrback lives in Coral Springs, FL, where she runs Prancercise LLC. There’s a Prancercise book and everything!

Rohrback’s Prancercise video has gone viral and the majority of the coverage makes fun of it (It’s on the Huffington Post under the “Comedy” section) but I actually really and truly think Prancercise is awesome. Rohrback is realizing her personal dream and working out in the process. It looks a bit silly, sure, but who says exercise has to be all treadmills, weights, brightly-colored running shoes and designer sports bras, anyway? More power to  Rohrback and all her prancers. Keep on prancin’!
