By  |

pom2After a two-year legal battle, POM Wonderful will finally have to stop exaggerating health claims on advertisements for pomegranate juice. The Federal Trade Commission upheld a judge's ruling that the company made false claims about the their products' health benefits.POM

POM marketing made frequent claims that drinking pomegranate juice can help treat heart disease, prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction.

Specifically,POM claimed pomegranate juice could cut arterial plaque by 30%, promote healthy blood vessels and work 40% as well as Viagra.

FTC has found out that current research definitely does not prove that the juice prevents or treats any illnesses. In fact, drinking pomegranate juice is probably as effective as taking a placebo- though it does provide a healthy dose of antioxidants. It has recommended that POM receive FDA approval before making any more claims about the health benefits of its products.

The FTC's ruling could affect other products that claim to treat diseases, said the Wall Street Journal.
