Nicole Kidman Finally Admitted She Got Botox, And It’s Really Disappointing

Nicole Kidman told an Italian newspaper that she used to get Botox, but “got out of it” and can finally move her face again. The knee-jerk response is to laugh at the admission: Her tight, expressionless face didn't keep the secret well, despite her years of denying any kind of cosmetic surgery. But snickering at her regrets about aging in Hollywood is exactly what makes women feel like they need to secretly alter their faces, and feel ashamed to discuss what they're doing (and why). And unfortunately, Kidman brushed past conversations about any of that–and talked about sunscreen.

Nicole Kidman plastic surgery rumors have been rampant for years, but this is the first that she's openly admitted to doing anything beyond natural skin care. But in an interview with the major Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, Kidman was more open than she has been in the past:

“No surgery for me. I did try Botox, unfortunately, but I got out of it and now I can finally move my face again.”

She also emphasized that her looks can be chalked up to healthy habits:

I am completely natural. I wear sunscreen, I don’t smoke and I take care of myself, and I am proud to say that. Anybody can do anything to themselves – I don’t judge – but personally I believe in being physically fit. That’s how I was raised. I can’t go in the sun because I’m fair-skinned. It was a nightmare when I was younger but it has its benefits now.

It's not really Kidman's responsibility to philosophize about aging and self image for women, and she's right: It's great to prioritize health, sunscreen, fitness, and all of that nice stuff. But saying that “anybody can do anything to themselves” doesn't answer the question of why she got Botox, and lied about getting botox. And if we're going to talk about plastic surgery and aging, those are the answers that matter most.
