You’ll Love Naked Yoga If You Love Yoga But Hate Pants

naked yogaA New York City yoga studio aptly named Bold & Naked has pulled out all the stops and is offering the most yoga-ish yoga classes of all time: ones where you practice in the nude.

Doing yoga naked is nothing new–the practice is old as yoga itself, but having it offered as a class you pay for is pretty rare fare. Co-owners Joschi Schwarz and Monika Werner opened their studio eight years ago, but just started offering nudie classes in the past two years. The pair believe that yoga in the buff can be liberating and helps yoga practitioners be more in tune with themselves and others.

Schwarz mentions a few more benefits:

“The naked classes verses the clothed classes are more fun. You don’t have to worry about pants or what you’re going to wear; you don’t have to buy expensive clothing.”

Allow me to repeat what is easily the best part of that statement with emphasis: “you don't have to worry about pants.”

Werner stresses the community aspect of yoga sans clothes:

“We are all in the same boat…You get a real sense of community that you don’t get in clothed classes.”

If being in your birthday suit before another gender bothers you, Bold & Naked offers all-male and all-female classes, but if you like to mix it up in the exposed genitalia department, they do have a few co-ed classes a week. As ABC News puts it, the classes are “[m]eant to be sensual but “not sexual.”” Though I bet they are sometimes both.

Truth be told, I'm not sure if I'd like naked yoga. There's something comforting to me about being clothed while I exercise around other people, but I can totally understand the appeal for those who are perhaps less self conscious about their naked bodies and less likely to awkwardly stare at other people's exposed butt-holes. Maybe I'll try it out sometime…alone…in the privacy of my own home.
