LLL USA World Breastfeeding Week Theme 2010

By  |

In support of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) World Breastfeeding Week 2010 theme, the La Leche League USA World Breastfeeding Week theme is “Breastfeeding The Baby Friendly Way.”

While World Breastfeeding Week is officially August 1 – August 7, 2010, LLL USA celebrates its fundraising and awareness campaign from May 1 – September 30, 2010. In keeping with the theme, LLL USA’s World Breastfeeding Week Celebration’s 2010 focus will be:

~ Revitalize activities within health systems, and among healthcare providers and communities to support women to achieve their breastfeeding intentions.
~ Inform people everywhere that protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding is a mother’s right, a child’s right, and a human right.
~ Enable women and all who care about human rights to advocate for healthcare systems which support breastfeeding.
~ Ensure that health workers who care for mothers and babies are adequately trained to counsel and support them in optimal infant feeding.

If you are interested in setting up your own World Breastfeeding Week Celebration, the LLL USA WBW pages are a good place to get started. Keep in mind that a new edition of LLLI's The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is coming out in July and that would make an excellent thing around which to center a celebration. For example, you could:

~ Include copies of the new book in a silent auction or gift basket raffle.
~ Donate copies to local medical facilities that serve new mothers and to local libraries.
~ Ask stores such as Target (which, frankly, could use a public relations boost in the breastfeeding community after this incident and its aggressive promotion of sales of artificial baby milk) to set up a breastfeeding-related display that includes copies of the book.
