Former Presidential candidate and all-around smarmy-ass guy John Edwards reportedly suffered a heart attack scare in February. Rumor has it that his doctors have warned him to stop drinking.

According to the National Enquirer (the source that originally broke the story about Edwards and his mistress, Rielle Hunter) the 59-year-old Edwards was at home “when he started to feel pain and tightness in his chest.” He called his (former? current?) mistress/girlfriend/mother of his daughter and she came over and rushed him to the hospital where he was monitored and then released. According to the National Enquirer‘s source, doctors told him that he needs to limit his alcohol intake.

Edwards has apparently had a heart arrhythmia for some time. According to the American Heart Association, alcohol can have a big impact on cardiovascular health, including a heightened risk of high blood pressure and stroke.

Personally, I find John Edwards abhorrent. I loved him back in 2004 when he seemed like a nice, fresh-faced family guy, but my opinion of him has seriously dropped since he cheated on his cancer-stricken wife and was accused of using campaign funds illegally. And I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels that way about him. Still, he has four children, three of them under 18, to be a father to, so if this report is right, I certainly hope he can get himself well for his family’s sake, whether his chest pain was truly due to alcohol use or not. Either way, this report of his heart attack and drinking is scarcely more than just a rumor (one that we hope, for his kids’ sakes, won’t prove to be true).
