It’s no secret that Americans are obsessed with social media. You can’t go to a single restaurant without seeing a mob of patrons staring aimlessly down at their phones. City streets are crowded with walkers staring down at their screens instead of where they’re actually going. It’s pretty much the most annoying thing ever, except we do it too, sometimes, so we really can’t complain.

In addition to restaurants, another place people are blowing up their phones is at the gym. Transformation Tuesdays, Motivation Mondays and Throwback Thursdays are all excellent excuses to upload body progress posts to Tweet, Instagram and Facebook. To celebrate Planet Fitness and SoulCycle becoming public companies, EllipticalReviews.com wanted to see just how public Americans are going with their fitness activities — by analyzing social media.

In order to discover what people were tweeting about, the review site flagged mentions of the keywords “gym,” “workout,” ‘fitness,” “cardio,” and “exercise.” The results were surprising, finding the states with the highest mentions of these workout objectives were Nevada, New Jersey and Texas. Washington D.C., however, trumps all of them.

Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota ranked low, but two of the lowest-scoring states were in the South: Arkansas and Mississippi. We’re wondering if all that nice weather mean less gym time and more time for outdoorsy activities, like hiking or fishing.

Other surprising findings? Californians tweets about working out 92 percent more than New Yorkers. Yoga is the most tweeted-about workout activity in the U.S., and running marathons is an incredibly-tweeted about activity — but only in the midwest and on the east coast.
