If you’re a woman, you know the struggles of hormonal birth control. You get on it hoping to solve all of your lady problems in one fell swoop only to be greeted with other, sometimes worse issues.

Okay, so it’s true that not all woman deal with huge side-effects from birth control. Some BC allows them to live comfortably with certain conditions that are otherwise very painful without it. But other times, women just can’t seem to find the right birth control that works for them. That’s where non-hormonal birth control can become your savior.

How Hormonal Birth Control Works

In case you’re wondering, hormonal birth control is a little odd. Basically, when you take that pill or put on that patch or insert your Nuva ring, you’re putting man-made hormones into your body. Those hormones then stop your natural cycle and instead, bypass all of your normal functions. Basically, the hormones you take stop your body from ovulating. No ovulation = no risk of pregnancy. It’s pretty standard stuff.

But is hormonal birth control really all it’s cracked up to be?

To put things in perspective, hormonal birth control isn’t as great as we make it out to be. Yes, it’s helped so many women plan their lives and live comfortably without the risk of an unwanted pregnancy. It’s even cleared up other reproductive medical conditions.

But there are quite a few side effects that a lot of us deal with while on hormonal birth control.

  • Spotting
  • Irregular periods
  • Breast tenderness
  • Nausea
  • Weight gain
  • Headaches
  • Decreased libido
  • Mood swings

These may not seem all that bad on their own but if you experience a number of them, they can really put a damper on your life. For example, if, like me, you end up with headaches, a decreased libido, spotting and irregular periods, it can affect your relationship and daily life quite a bit.

Sex is important. If you never want to do it in the first place, what good is birth control, anyway?

And those reasons are why I stopped taking hormonal birth control.

I was so sick and tired of all the random side effects, even after trying a few different kinds. For some reason, my body just didn’t like the foreign hormones. I had so many issues that my day-to-day life was impacted along with my relationship.

What Happened When I Stopped Taking Hormonal Birth Control

The effects of actually ditching my hormonal birth control were amazing. After I stopped downing that pill every single day at the same time, I found that my life changed drastically.

Here’s what happened to me when I stopped taking the pill:

  • I had way more energy
  • I felt more active
  • My libido jumped right back up where it was before
  • My mood was stabilized
  • My periods actually got way more regular (to the day)
  • My relationship improved (for above reasons)

It was clear to me right away that hormonal birth control was just not for me. And you know what? There are more and more women who just aren’t happy with it, either.

But the problem is, there aren’t many non-hormonal birth controls with the same level of effectiveness.

Which means we’re either left to suffer the side effects or become overly stressed whenever we do have sex. And that shouldn’t be a stressful activity. Luckily, there are more and more non-hormonal birth controls being developed and let me tell you, they make your life a lot easier.

One of the most popular non-hormonal birth control out there is the copper IUD (intrauterine device).

This is the method I chose after ditching my hormonal birth control and I refuse to go back.

The copper IUD is a very small, T-shaped device that has copper wire wrapped around it. It works by creating an uninhabitable environment for sperm and it also prevents any fertilized egg from implanting into the uterine wall.

But the best part is, it’s 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

And for me, that’s the best part. I can live my life normally, naturally and prevent pregnancy at the same time. To me, that makes my life so much better than succumbing to the common method of hormonal birth control and being forced to endure the struggles it brings into my life. Birth control is super important and I’d never recommend ditching it entirely, but with non-hormonal options becoming more readily available to young women like me, there is another option if hormonal BC is making your life a hell of a lot more complicated than it needs to be.
