Emergency Services to Enter the 21st Century: Texting 911

The FCC is considering making 911 accessible through text message and video streaming. All we can say is: Finally. Maybe not with regards to streaming video, but the ability to send texts to 911 seems way overdue. Our great aunts can text; shouldn't emergency services be able to?

As Wired points out, implementing the potentially life-saving service could be expensive, and they don't know where the funding will come from yet. If people could text 911, crimes like kidnapping and school shootings could be prevented. Apparently, in the Virginia Tech shootings, several people tried to text emergency services. Do you think the new service would be worth the money needed to fund it?
