Only three more days of DIY left! Today we have one of the easiest (although certainly not the prettiest) projects you’ll ever make. This lavender rice compress (made from a sock!) is essentially a homemade heating pad, a perfect gift for anyone in your life that suffers from aches and pains.

I recently had my wisdom teeth out and my rice sock was key in helping to soothe my jaw pain after the swelling had gone down. It’s also perfect for pregnant women (or women in labor) to use for pain relief (as long as they get the ok from their care provider). Rice socks are also commonly used in physical therapy and for pain relief for people with arthritis or other aches and pains. Rice compresses are portable, versatile in terms of use and incredibly cheap to make.

You can make this without the lavender, but the rice by itself smells a little bit weird after a few uses.

  • a large, thick cotton sock
  • a bag of white rice
  • about 1/4 cup of dried lavender

I used some kneesocks I got on sale at Target; I’ve made a compress before with heavy duty men’s tube socks, but I wanted something a little more pleasing to the eye this time around. You could also sew a tube out of canvas or another material (like flannel) if you want to get a bit fancier. I bet it would work if you made the rice sock AND made a cover, in case you’d like to make it washable. For the rice, just get the cheapest white rice available at your local store, but do not use minute rice.


Step 1Assemble your materials.

Step 2: Place rice into sock until sock is about 3/4 of the way full (it will use the whole bag or the majority of the bag).

Step 3: Place lavender into sock and massage it around so it gets distributed throughout with the rice (alternately, you could put the lavender and the rice in at the same time to make sure the lavender is spread around).

Step 4: Tie a knot in the sock (you could also cut it off and sew it, if you have a bit more time/energy).

That’s it! You could use different herbs or oils to create your own scent for the rice compress.

To use, place in a clean microwave (or on a plate) and heat in increments of 20 seconds until it reaches the desired heat level. You can also freeze your rice compress and it will work as a cold pack.
