Burger King Breakfast Is Probably Healthier Than Your Fancy Schmancy Brunch

burger king breakfastIt feels like it was only yesterday that Taco Bell decided to get in on the fast food breakfast game. Now Burger King is in the mix and we have a Game of Thrones style clash of kings happening. The company is trying to lure customers looking for cheap and quick meals before work away from the golden arches by offering their own dollar menu of morning eats. For at least a limited time, Burger King locations in the continental United States will be offering a “King Deals” value menu. It's not pretty, but no one is going to Burger King for green juice and steel cut oatmeal.

I peeped the King's Deal menu and chose one of the items to examine from a health perspective. As expected, it is straight up just not good for your body. The Burger King website describes the Sausage & Cheese Muffin Sandwich as “a combination of savory sizzling sausage and melted American cheese nestled inside a warm English muffin.” The sandwich is just as bad for you as you'd expect: 340 calories, 27 grams of carbohydrates and 20 grams of fat. Yikes, right? Right, but before you judge anyone who drives through a fast food restaurant for breakfast, consider your own snobby morning habits.

Though Burger King's breakfast options may be neither healthy nor fancy, the luxe brunch you pay $30 for is pretty much just as bad––nay worse. At least at Burger King, you don't have to wait 45 minutes for a table.

Let's take a look at typical brunch items to see how they compare to BK's 340 calorie breakfast sandwich:

Eggs Benedict. Between the hollandaise and english muffins and ham, you're likely brunching on over 1,050 calories before you even get to your 350 calorie side of hash browns.

Pancakes. One or two flapjacks won't kill you, but a classic stack of them  soaking in butter, syrup and other toppings could add up to a carb-y 1,000 calories or more. Even just a 1/4 cup of maple syrup is about 200 calories.

Omelette. Unless you're asking for egg whites only and forgoing cheese, it's likely your big savory omelette is over 700 calories, made with three eggs, cooked in butter and filled with cheese.

Breakfast Cocktails. A mimosa will only set you back about 140 calories, but who has ever had just one mimosa? Enough juicy breakfast cocktails can double the financial and caloric price of your brunch.

Chocolate Croissant. Maybe you're choosing to just have a breakfast pastry instead of a whole plate with bacon, eggs and potatoes. You're still going to be consuming a ton of calories. One average sized chocolate croissant is about 340 calories…just like a Burger King breakfast sandwich.
