Going braless isn’t exactly a new trend. Ladies of the 90’s like Jennifer Aniston’s character Rachel Green on Friends often weren’t wearing bras and celebs like Rihanna and Kendall Jenner have been seen rocking no-bra looks recently.
However, it's still true that women who opt to go bra-free get some raised eyebrows because there’s still a societal expectation that we strap our boobs down — even in the dead of summer when a bra is just another layer making everything sweatier. Every gal knows the sweet, sweet release one gets from taking off their bra at the end of a long day. Now, imagine that feeling all the time. It’s freeing AF!
Choosing what to wear, how you want to look and what to do with your own body is empowering. The reason you do or do not wear a bra should be based on what you (and you alone!) want to do — but here are some points to put in the pro-side of your pro/con list when deciding whether or not to wear a bra.
1. It’s More Comfortable
The most obvious reason to go sans-bra is that it is comfy AF. You won’t even think about your boobs during day because they’ll be free!
2. Boob Sweat is Reduced
Let's cut the 'be a lady' crap and admit it: boob sweat is abundant during the summer. Bras are like personal saunas for your boobs when it’s hot out. This isn't to say you won’t still sweat — you will — but you will sweat less if your breasts have room to breathe.
3. Bra Straps Can Ruin an Outfit
Summer trends usually involve spaghetti straps and off-the-shoulder tops that are easily ruined by bra straps. Forget the bra and wear your cute tops as they were intended. Sure you could go the strapless bra route, but who likes the constant adjustments that a strapless entails! RiRi clearly isn't a fan — which just might be why the "Rude Boy" singer opts to go braless so often!
4. Bras Can Actually Be Super Gross
Bras can accumulate bacteria, oil, dirt, yeast, fungi and a myriad of gross things. It’s advised that you wash bras every 2 wears, but if we’re being real, most of us wear them more than that before tossing it in the washing machine. Leaving your bra behind will save you from all the nasty things that can cause rashes or acne on your chest.
5. You’ll Save Your Precious Moolah
This seems obvious, but bras can be expensive. If you’re not wearing bras, you won’t have to spend your money on them. Just think of all the things you could have done with the money spent at Victoria’s Secret. You can take that bra money and use it to do literally anything else!
6. Going Braless Makes Your Boobies Stronger
Despite popular opinion, bras don’t actually keep your breasts stronger. A 15-year study on the effect of bras on breasts by University of Franche-Comté professor Jean-Denis Rouillon found that women’s breasts actually got stronger by not wearing a bra. No need to worry about working your chest at the gym, just throw out your bra and let the fight against gravity do the work!
7. Your Circulation Will Be Improved
It has been found that most women aren’t wearing bras that fit, but even if you are wearing the perfect size, frequently wearing any tight clothing is not good for your circulation. The way bras squeeze the area around your chest slows your circulation by compressing your major blood vessels, according to the same study done by Professor Jean-Denis. This can lead to cardiovascular issues later on, which is SO not worth it.
8. Encourage Healthy Breast Tissue
Rouillon’s study found that ditching a bra caused more muscle tissue to grow, which ended up providing natural support. Basically, your body supports you on this braless journey.
9. People Probably Won’t Even Notice
Although most people with breasts wear bras daily, you’d be surprised at how little people pay attention. Any time I’ve gone without a bra, literally no one noticed. And if they did, they didn’t say anything. So, if you’re afraid people will look at you weird — or even make some snide comment — don’t let it hold you back!
10. Everyone Has Nipples
11. You’ll Sleep Better
12. It Improves Posture
13. Your Mood Will Be Perkier... And So Will Your Breasts!
We've already discussed the relief felt when your bra comes off and while you'll be perkier living the braless lifestyle, your boobies will be as well! Bras may not offer the support we thought. While back in the day, bras were said to help keep your breasts lifted in the long run, Rouillon’s study found the opposite to be true. It showed that women who never wore bras had nipples on average seven millimeters higher in relation to their shoulders each year than regular bra users.
14. It Feels Adventurous
Due to our society’s taboo on going braless, it feels a bit adventurous to go without one. You’ll feel like you’re walking around with a secret all day, even if it’s something as innocent as not wearing a bra. Even if people notice you're bra-free, who the eff cares? That feels even more scandalous. Let yourself (and your boobs) take a walk on the wild side.
15. You'll Be in Good Company
Look at all the celebs who are 100% embracing the no-bra look. Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Bella Hadid are just a few mega-stars who are riding the braless train. Join 'em!
16. Because You Just Don't Want To
Despite all of the health benefits and the feeling of empowerment, you should go without a bra simply because you want to. You’re the boss of your body, so go out with or without a bra as you wish!
