Adriana Lima Perpetuates Myth Of Perfect Post-Baby Body At Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

In case you missed it, last night was the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. A night of degrading women with lingerie disguised as fashion, music and fun. Known as the “sexiest night in television,” this show also featured model Adriana Lima who just gave birth two months ago. And make no mistake, her post-pregnancy body was not the motivation that women needed to see.

Lima gave birth to a baby girl in September–just six weeks before this show was taped. And judging by the looks of her on stage, you'd never know it. For her, getting in shape after giving birth was very difficult, she told CBS This Morning:

It was the biggest challenge of my life.

The 31-year-old went on to say that she wasn't sure what having a baby would do to her modeling figure:

You don't know what nature is going to return to you You do your job. I was working out. I was being a mom. … I'm Brazilian and I'm a woman. I was really curvy when I was pregnant and I gained a lot of weight, really.

And when asked what “a lot of weight” meant, she simply replied:

Something over 40 pounds. Much, much, much more than that. I don't want to give it away. So it was a challenge. But nature was good, I guess. Thank you, nature.

But not everyone was so thankful for Lima showcasing her post-pregnancy bod so soon after giving birth. The Twittersphere opened up with women discussing how this made them feel:

Girls, just keep in mind that Adriana Lima JUST had a baby before doing the show. &&& her body will still look more BaNgIN' than all of ours.

And @kcatwalk1 wrote:

I'm so excited for the VS Fashion Show but I know I'll be depressed because I don't look like Adriana Lima.

Not exactly the motivation or body-positive message that women–and new moms–need.

But Lima's body, of course, didn't naturally fall back into catwalk-worthy shape. Nope. This model and new mom has been working out “four to six hours every day, seven days a week,” according to her trainer, Michael Olajide, Jr. who told People magazine that “she wanted to be more defined and athletic.”

To get there, Olajide had Lima on a strict workout regimen.

At 9 a.m. she would get on the bike, followed by core exercises, shadow boxing, glute and legs work outs and then an intense jump rope routine. She would then do some cool-down stretching. Then she'd do it all over again from 5pm-8pm.

Adriana’s metabolism had slowed down, and that’s what happens when you’re nesting, but we had to get her burning 24/7. It was incredible to see that type of dedication and fortitude.

Dedication is one thing, but how about giving your body a break after having a baby? It seems like she's setting a bad example–not to mention a very unrealistic standard–for most women after giving birth.
