Demi Lovato Paid Way Too Much For A Small, Basic Tattoo By Kat Von D

Kat Von D charges a lot for her tattoos. The shop minimum at High Voltage Tattoo, where she works, is an astronomical $200 ($60-$100 is standard here in NYC), and word on the street is that Kat herself charges a $500 minimum, plus $500/hour. Of course, I could be wrong…you have to physically go in to find out what the shop charges per hour, another unorthodoxy, so I have to go by what the majority of people on the internet say. But considering the most celebrated tattoo artists (not-on-TV division) charge about $200/hour, one would hope one would at least try to get one's money's worth when visiting this much-hyped artist.

Not so for Demi Lovato, whose recent visit to Kat Von D bore a perfectly fine, but very basic, tattoo of some silhouetted birds flying from the word “faith” to the pre-existing cross on her wrist. “Thank you so much for my new ink!!” she tweeted  at Kat Von D. “I think it's beautiful and I love it!!”

I realize Demi Lovato has a lot of money and can spend it how she likes, but this just seems foolhardy. The design is so simple that any decent tattoo artist could do it. Most decent “regular” artists charge $150/hour, and this could not have taken more than two hours, leaving the thing's actual value a good $200 under Kat's celebrity fee. Just because you have a lot of money doesn't mean you should throw it down the toilet of Kat's gaping, fame-hungry maw.

Also, Kat's shop has an involved application process whereby you have to get them “stoked” on your design, and that doesn't look like something that the celebrated tattooist would be excited to add to her already impressive portfolio. It looks like Kat scored a double win off of Demi: a celebrity client and an insanely outsized fee. Between this and Scarlett Johansson, I think all celebrities should be subjected to a mandatory class on how to get a tattoo.
