April Fools’ Day is the worst. You can’t believe anything you hear or read or see, and people who screw up and say something they shouldn’t have can use it to cover their asses. Take, for example, T-Pain, who did an interview with Vulture which was published yesterday. He let slip that FKA twigs and Robert Pattinson are engaged, but then later on was all, “Whoops! Shouldn’t have said that. April Fools’!” Except now People has confirmed the engagement. What a mess.

T-Pain explained that FKA twigs might not contribute to his album because she’s “engaged now, so that’s about to be a whole other thing.” The interviewer was surprised by the news, and T-Pain elaborated:

“Yeah, to ol’ Patty [Robert Pattinson]. I don’t know if she wanted anybody to know that …”

Probably not, if she hasn’t said anything about it to the public. Clearly it wasn’t his place to share that news, but lucky for him the interview was published on a day of pranks and lies. So later he tweeted this:

Really, T-Pain? First of all, that means that you knew the interview would be published on April 1. (Vulture doesn’t specify when the interview was conducted, just that it was “recently.”) It also means you were clever enough to slip the alleged joke into an unrelated question. Do you really expect us to believe that? Are you sure you’re not just covering your ass with a convenient excuse?

Well, if you believe People’s report from just a couple of hours after that tweet, it would appear that covering his ass is exactly what T-Pain was doing. Two sources confirmed the couple’s engagement to the magazine. Of course, Rob and FKA (Should I treat that like her first name? Am I doing that right?) haven’t commented on the reports. If the T-Pain quote didn’t exist, I would be less willing to believe this. As it is, I’m pretty sure he let the cat out of the bag.

Too bad it’s no longer April Fools’ Day so he can’t claim his tweet about April Fools’ was an April Fools’ joke.
