Getting drunk and eloping with a quickie wedding in Las Vegas is an American tradition practiced by everyone from Britney Spears to Ross and Rachel. But as it turns out, getting bombed in Sin City can sometimes actually prevent an elopement from happening rather than encouraging it. Such was the case for Amy Adams, who last year married Darren Le Gallo after a seven-year engagement and a child together.

Apparently the wedding almost happened sooner. Amy recently told Marie Claire UK (via E! News) that she and Darren intended to get married quietly in Las Vegas, but the alcohol they were imbibing turned out to be the opposite of liquid courage. In fact, it actually stopped them from going through with it entirely.

“We wanted to find a chaplain, go to the desert and get married at sunset. But to be honest, we got too drunk. Then it was just not going to happen.”

I find this so amusing, for more than one reason. First of all, of course Amy Adams, the lady with the seven-year engagement, would get so drunk in Las Vegas that she didn't get married. It's such an Amy Adams thing to do.

Second of all, it really does make me wonder what the ideal window of drunkenness is for tying the knot on the fly. Like, what blood alcohol level do you have to be at to switch over from “YEAH! LET'S GET MARRIED RIGHT NOW! WOOHOO!” to “You know what, I'm just not feeling it tonight. Let's put a pin in this and do it some other time”? Can a breathalyzer test determine that? I mean, I guess if you're busy being passed out face-first on the bed and/or throwing up in the toilet, it's hard to find the time or energy to make it to the chapel.

Drinking is weird.
