What You Missed This Weekend In Pop Culture: Star Wars, Kardashians & More
Celebrities don't ever seem to take a break from scandals and drama. But then again, if they did, we'd have nothing to read about! Don't worry though, since you were busy this weekend preparing for the holidays or snagging all the deals at the mall, we managed to round up all of the important pop culture stories that you need to know from the weekend. If you love Star Wars, you certainly were happy this weekend!
Star Wars: The Last Jedi absolutely crushed the box office this weekend
Did you expect any less? After the mega success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, it comes as no surprise that this follow-up did so well. In fact, Star Wars: The Last Jedi now holds the #1 spot for the biggest opening weekend in 2017 and the #2 spot overall, right behind its predecessor. This weekend, Star Wars: The Last Jedi pulled in $220,047,000. That is one pretty penny!
There was a lot of press around this film, not just because it was well-liked by fans and critics, but because it was the final film that Carrie Fisher got to portray Princess-turned-General Leia in. Sadly, Carrie Fisher passed away (just days before her mother, Debbie Reynolds) in December 2016. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is dedicated to “Our Princess, Carrie Fisher” and is a fitting send-off for her character. The film holds a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and some critics are torn on whether it is the best Star Wars movie since Empire Strikes Back or the best Star Wars movie overall.
The royal family Christmas card is here
Prince William and Kate Middleton have the cutest family with little Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Kensington Palace revealed the family's annual Christmas card and it is just perfect. The portrait was taken earlier in 2017, as Kate does not appear to be pregnant in the family photo. The happy parents will be welcoming a third child in 2018.
Along with sharing the adorable photo, there was announcement about Princess Charlotte. The post said, “Their Royal Highnesses have also announced this morning that Princess Charlotte will attend the Willcocks Nursery School in London from January 2018. The Willcocks Nursery School has said: ‘We are delighted that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen the Willcocks Nursery School for Princess Charlotte. We look forward to welcoming Charlotte to our nursery in January.'” Princess Charlotte is off to nursery school already, boy has the time flown by.
AMC is holding a Breaking Bad marathon for New Year's Eve
Ring in the new year the right way with Breaking Bad! Can you believe the show first aired ten years ago? It feels like just yesterday Walter White came into our lives. In honor of the show's tenth anniversary, the network that gave us the critically acclaimed drama is beginning a huge marathon that will last all of January. Starting on December 31, AMC will air all 64 episodes of Breaking Bad. The marathon is being broken up into weekends, so don't fear. You can still go to work and catch every episode when you're off over the weekend. The series, which starred Bryan Cranston as Walt and Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman first aired on January 20, 2008. AMC is airing promos for the marathon, using clips from the show and interspersing the number ten into the promo. The Breaking Bad marathon begins on December 31st at 2 PM.
Steve Harrington might shave that glorious head of hair
Our beloved Steve Harrington would be nothing without his hair! Okay, maybe that is a bit harsh. But really, the best part of Stranger Things season two was Steve and Dustin's friendship and these two best buddies bonded over hair care! Steve wouldn't be the same if he didn't have those lush locks. But actor Joe Keery (who plays Steve on Stranger Things) has said he might just shave his head.
But it's for a good cause! Maybe? In a show of support to one of his cast member's getting the recognition they deserve, Joe said he'd shave it all off. David Harbour (AKA everyone's favorite police chief in Hawkins, Chief Hopper) was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. Because of the nomination, Joe felt like showing his support by saying that the Duffer brothers (the creators of Stranger Things) could shave his head if David won. No word yet on how serious this may be, but we'll find out in a few weeks when the Golden Globes air!
Ian McKellan wants to play Gandalf again
It has already been three years since the last time Ian McKellan wore that giant gray wig and carried around a massive staff. The actor, best known for portraying Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and then reprising the role for The Hobbit trilogy, is ready to get back into the action. Amazon is currently in the works on creating a multi-season TV series based on J.R.R. Tolkien‘s The Lord of the Rings novels. The Amazon series could also have multiple spin-off series, pending it does well. Peter Jackson‘s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring premiered in 2001, with Ian McKellan, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, and more starring in the film and the follow-up two movies. The final film in that franchise premiered in 2003 and it seems that is long enough for studios to wait to remake it!
Ian appeared on Graham Norton’s BBC Radio 2 show on December 16 and told the world that he hopes to play the iconic role another time. He was asked how he felt about someone else playing Gandalf, to which he replied, “What do you mean, another Gandalf? I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old.” Here's to hoping that studio executives listen to this wise wizard and bring the actor onto the project!
We might *finally* have confirmation from Khloé Kardashian that she is pregnant
Now, if you've been Keeping Up With The Kardashians (the show and just their lives in general), then you know three of the sisters are pregnant. Kim Kardashian West is expecting her third child with Kanye West, this time via surrogate. Kylie Jenner and Khloé Kardashian are both expecting their first children. But even though it has been widely reported in the media and confirmed by family sources, neither Kylie or Khloé have publicly responded to the baby news. Which is odd, seeing as this family lives with a camera on them 24/7 essentially.
There has been a lot of speculation on what this means and people have been scouring the entire family's social media accounts to find a hint of what is going on. It was reported that Kylie hosted a pink baby shower, but she never posted any actual pictures from the event. Well, it looks like when the second half of season 14 of Keeping Up With The Kardashians returns, we'll finally get confirmation of at least Khloé Kardashian's pregnancy. She is reported to be expecting her first child with her boyfriend Tristan Thompson and in the preview for the season, there is a moment where the entire Kardashian-Jenner clan is gathered and it appears that Khloé is making a big announcement. Everyone's faces looked shocked and multiple family members ask if she's serious. Even Kris Jenner appears to cry over the news!
Kevin Hart dressed up as Shaq for Saturday Night Live and the basketball legend loved it
Right before his movie Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle premieres, Kevin Hart stopped by New York City to host Saturday Night Live. It was his third time hosting the show, and as always, he was a laugh riot. If you didn't know, Kevin has a bit of a long-running joke where he makes fun of his friend, Shaquille O'Neal. In one of Kevin's standup specials, Shaq picked Kevin up like he was a little doll and wrapped him in his coat. Kevin then went on to make fun of how long it takes Shaq to fall down because he is so big! Well, Kevin kept up this hilarious banter for his SNL appearance, by dressing up as Shaq. Now, considering Kevin Hart is a short guy and Shaq is one of the tallest men that we follow in the media, there would obviously have to be a bit of creative costuming. That's where the stilts came in!
Shaq obviously saw the skit, which is based on the Inside the NBA post-game show that Shaq regularly appears on. The basketball player posted on Instagram about the video, calling Kevin a “fool” for the video, but also said that he had to laugh at himself over it.
That's all for this week’s installment of This Weekend in Pop Culture, stay tuned for a new one next Monday. Because while celebs may go stale, you can count on the gossip to always stay fresh.
