Over the last several weeks, so many people in Hollywood have been facing allegations of sexual assault, but one of the most recent is denying everything. Early Tuesday morning, former The Voice star Melanie Martinez responded to the accusations of rape that former friend Timothy Heller made against her, and according to the singer, she has been wrongly accused.

In case you’re out of the loop, Melanie and Timothy were once very close, often appearing in each other’s Instagram posts, but have since lost touch, presumably as Melanie gained fame as her music career took off. But now, it sounds like there may have been another, more serious factor in the end of their friendship if Timothy’s allegations are true.

Timothy took to Twitter this week to share her story of assault, admitting that when she originally decided to share what allegedly happened to her, she had no plans of revealing the name of her assailant. But now that she’s changed her mind, she thinks “it’s important for you all to know this is about Melanie Martinez.”

According to the long note, Timothy shared via screenshots, the assault took place years ago. Timothy claimed that Melanie allegedly performed oral sex on her and penetrated her with a sex toy without her consent, despite the fact that Timothy had told her no on multiple occasions. She added that she knew what happened to her that night was being “molested by my best friend.”

“The only reason I do this now is because I’m hoping because of recent events, people will believe me,” Timothy wrote. “If you begin to doubt the abuse taking place in this story, I beg you to imagine her role in this being a man. Girls can rape girls. Best friends can rape best friends. Friendship does not equal consent. Silence doesn’t equal consent.”

And now, less than 24 hours later, Melanie is sharing a statement on Twitter of her own, claiming that Timothy “never said no to what we chose to do together.” She acknowledged their friendship and added that she is sending “love and light always” to her ex-best friend.

Here’s Melanie’s statement in full:

It’s important to distinguish that “not saying no” does not mean “saying yes” in any circumstances and the only way consent can be given is through verbal and enthusiastic language.

Melanie’s response to Timothy’s claims is the first time she’s shared anything on Twitter since September when she released her music video for “Mad Hatter.” It’s not clear whether any legal action will be taken or if such a process has already begun.
