Solange revealed that she’ll be cancelling her New Year’s Eve performance at Afropunk festival in South Africa due to her battle with autonomic disorder. The singer opened up about her health struggles on Instagram, admitting that she’s been suffering with a problem that attacks her nervous system for the last five months. She’s also still in the process of figuring out how to live with it, hence why cancelling her music performance was the best decision for her health.

“Wrote, deleted and re wrote this like 5 times…Still not sure what exactly or how much I want to share,” she wrote before explaining the reason behind her NYE cancellation. “However it’s so important to me for the people in South Africa, a place that has tremendous meaning to me and that has given me SO SO MUCH, to know why I won’t be performing at Afro Punk this NYE.”

“The past five months I have been quietly treating, and working through an Autonomic Disorder. It been a journey that hasn’t been easy on me,” she continued. “Sometimes I feel cool, and other times not so cool at all. It’s a complicated diagnoses, and I’m still learning so much myself.”

Although Solange did not share what type of autonomic disorder she was diagnosed with, she then explained that her doctors did not think it’s a good idea for her to travel to South Africa – especially since it’s song a long flight. Also, for her to perform right after is a health hazard.

“I can’t put into words how saddened and sorry I am that I am unable to perform for you guys this NYE, there is simply no other place I wanted to be than there with my family to bring in 2018 with you,” she added before promising she’d be back to deliver her performance. “It is so extremely important to me to connect with the people who have so closely inspired me in so many ways.”

Solange went on to thank Afropunk for their support, as well as all the other festivals that have known about her health and been accommodating. She thanked the people involved for both keeping it discrete and for supporting her. She ended her note by revealing that her goal in 2018 is to make sure she’s taking care of herself, despite having had the most “fulfilling” year of her life.

So what exactly is an autonomic disorder? Well, according to Mayo Clinic, it’s a problem with the nervous system that can create issues with the regulation of the heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature, as well as cause symptoms such as fatigue, lightheadedness, and weakness.

We wish her all the best during this difficult time. We hope she’ll be able to get back on her feet in 2018 so she can keep doing what she loves.
