Selena Gomez Tearfully Thanks Her Life-Saving BFF During Emotional Billboard Speech

By  |

Selena Gomez sure knows how to make a crowd emotional! While accepting Billboard's 2017 Woman of the Year award last night in Hollywood, the “Wolves” singer gave a tear-jerking speech thanking her BFF for saving her life earlier this year.

She wept as she paid tribute to Francia Raisa, who donated her kidney to Selena just a few months ago in order to save her from organ failure. “I think Francia should be getting this award,” Selena said as she broke down in tears. “She saved my life… I feel incredibly lucky.”

If you're not already crying from that emotional clip of Selena, then what Francia told reporters on the red carpet might do the trick. Before the ceremony, she revealed that she had no idea how sick Selena actually was. The Secret Life of an American Teenager actress was only told after the surgery that her BFF was just “two weeks away from kidney failure.” How terrifying? However, she's just glad she was able to help.

“Just seeing my friend get sick, and more sick, and more sick was hard but at the same time so positive for our friendship,” Francia said. “It got us closer but I also learned so much this year about myself. It was a very humbling experience.”

Elsewhere in Selena's speech, the singer reflected on how lucky she is. “Honestly, I couldn’t be more grateful for the position that I’ve been given in my career from 7 to 14 to now. I want people to know that I respect the platform that I have so deeply because I knew that I wanted to be a part of something great, I wanted people to feel great,” she continued.

She also opened up about the hard times that followed her life-changing surgery. “I feel like for me, with my music, I’ve been able to illustrate the things that I want. And I’m reminded by a team of people who believe in me even when I don’t myself and I couldn’t be more lucky,” she said.

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. To end her speech, Selena even teased new music in the near future. “I don’t know how I’ll repay it, maybe I’ll make an epic album for you guys and everyone else,” she said to a cheering crowd.

So there you have it! The promise of more Selena Gomez music. We always need a little more of that in our lives, don't we? Add in a collaboration or two with Justin Bieber and we're set!
