This is the year of Riverdale. Ever since the show debuted on The CW in early 2017, it became an instant hit and has already amassed a cult-like following. Stemming from the success of Riverdale, a show based on the Archie comics, TV execs decided it was time to revamp Sabrina the Teenage Witch, another Archie comics story. The spin-off/reboot series is intended to be dark, just like Riverdale, setting it apart from the late ’90s/early ’00s series starring Melissa Joan Hart. Since the news broke months ago, no concrete cast information has been shared — until now! The series has finally found a star to play Sabrina Spellman.

Netflix cast Mad Men star, Kiernan Shipka, to play Sabrina Spellman in the currently untitled series. So far, we know that the series will be based on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic series, which are a part of Archie Horror. The TV series will be a dark coming-of-age origin series centered on the teenage witch and apparently, it will be tonally similar to Rosemary’s Baby and The Excorist.
The plot will open with the teenage witch just beginning her education in sorcery — while trying to live a semi-normal life in the fictional town of Greendale (Riverdale’s neighbor) as a sophomore at Baxter High. The Sabrina series will feature a new LGBTQ+ character as well playing the witch’s cousin.
There are rumors that Sabrina might just turn up on Riverdale before her series hits Netflix debuts. *Fingers crossed* The series has already been picked up for two seasons on the streaming platform after Netflix swiped it from The CW.

Fans are stoked about Kiernan’s casting — in fact, people had been hoping the 18-year-old actress would get the role for months now. Executive producer on this project and Riverdale, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said, “We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list. This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater added: “I am thrilled that Kiernan is playing Sabrina and have no doubt that she will embody the strength, courage, and boldness that has made the character a fan favorite.” Kiernan’s going to fit the role perfectly!
