It’s official! Less than one month after ABC canceled the Roseanne revival due to a racist tweet from lead star Roseanne Barr, a new spin-off show has been confirmed. The network announced a 10-episode season that will feature everyone BUT Barr. Tentatively titled The Conners, the new series will bring back our favorite characters, including Darlene (Sara Gilbert), Dan (John Goodman), Jackie (Laurie Metcalf), Becky (Lecy Goranson), and D.J. (Michael Fishman).

“After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before,” ABC’s synopsis of the spin-off reads, hinting that Roseanne’s character may be killed off. We think we can safely assume that the matriarch of the family is certainly going to die. How else will they continue the show without her? It makes the most sense. Also, in the season finale, she was getting a knee surgery, so perhaps that’s when the “sudden turn of events” occurs.

“This iconic family — Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky, and D.J. — grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging, and in-laws in working-class America,” the synopsis continues. “Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns – with love, humor, and perseverance, the family prevails.”

As previously reported, the Roseanne reboot was canceled in May after Roseanne compared former Barack Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to a character from Planet of the Apes. Though the comedian later apologized, this was the last straw for ABC. Her comments quite literally caused the internet to implode and as a result, the network made the decision to cancel the show.

Considering the series has been – and will probably always be – Roseanne’s baby, many of us didn’t think a spin-off without her would ever happen. However, it appears as though the actress has accepted her fate and decided that she’d rather save jobs than protect her ego. It has also been confirmed that Roseanne will have nothing to do with the series behind-the-scenes either. According to ABC’s press release, “Roseanne Barr will have no financial or creative involvement in the new series.”

Roseanne even sent her best wishes to her former costars in a statement. “I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne,” she said. “I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved.”

The cast of The Conners also released a joint statement to say how happy they are to have the opportunity to return and continue to tell stories about the challenges facing working-class families. They also thanked their fans for their “tremendous amount of support.”

The new show is expected to fill the void left by the cancellation of Roseanne this fall on ABC.
