Riverdale‘s Sabrina Spin-Off is Heading to Netflix & is Already Confirmed For Two Seasons

Riverdale fans, get pumped for some more comic goodness! The currently untitled Sabrina the Teenage Witch spin-off has found a new home and it already has two seasons CONFIRMED. After the massive success of the first season of Riverdale, execs cooked up the idea to remake a show with Sabrina the Teenage Witch in a similarly dark tone.

Talks of a Sabrina-centric show began in September 2017 and it had been believed the show would appear on The CW as a companion series to Riverdale. We know the network loves putting their shows in the same universe (i.e. the massive success of the “Arrowverse” shows) and KJ Apa had said that Sabrina would be making an appearance on his show. But that was last season and still — nada! However, the Greendale focused show is set to make its debut on Netflix and it has already had 20 episodes ordered! Hopefully, we'll still get an appearance from Riverdale‘s Archie or Jughead in this new Sabrina series. Afterall, they'll be just across Sweetwater River!

We might not have a name for the Sabrina show, but we know it will be based on the comic book The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, published as part of the Archie Horror series. The pilot of the Sabrina spin-off will still have the same brains behind it as Riverdale, with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. working together behind the scenes. Roberto will pen the Sabrina pilot and Lee Toland Krieger will direct it. It seems likely that Netflix stepped into taking over the show after they saw a great deal of streaming success when Riverdale‘s first season appeared immediately on their platform. This isn't the first time Netflix might have stepped on some toes. Back when Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was first ordered by NBC, Netflix got involved and ordered two seasons of Kimmy.

Keep your friends close. Your enemies closer. #Riverdale returns Wednesday, October 11 at 8/7c only on The CW.

Many fans of Sabrina Spellman will not recognize this new Sabs as the series will be much darker than the 1996 to 2003 series Sabrina, The Teenage Witch starring Melissa Joan Hart. According to Deadline, the new series “finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.” MJH weighed in on the new series after the news first broke. She said to HuffPost during a Build Series interview, “They’re doing like a teen soapy version, like a drama version. Ours was obviously a comedy. It was like a light comedy about magic. There is going to be more witchcraft [in the new one] … [More like] Charmed or Buffy, maybe.” UMMM — count us TF in!

No actors are currently tied to this new project yet, but we're sure there will be news of casting coming out soon. Time's a-tickin' and there's a 20 episode order that Netflix is waiting on. Which star would you love to see play the teen witch? Perhaps someone like Dove Cameron? We could totally see it! Netflix execs should really consider bringing in Melissa Joan Hart, too, even if it is just for a cameo.
