Riverdale star Charles Melton’s social media past has come back to haunt him. The 27-year old actor, who took over the role of Reggie Mantle on season two of the hit CW series, has received a lot of heat after someone shared screenshots of fat-shaming comments he posted to Twitter in 2011 and 2012. When you read the tweets, you'll agree that they're very offensive.

“Fat chicks need to understand that wear yoga pants is a privilege, not a right,” he supposedly tweeted, followed by, “Headed to the gym. Word of wisdom for the day… if your fat… don't look in the mirror.” According to screenshots shared on Twitter, Charles even fat-shamed children.

Soon after the tweets went viral and the backlash ensued, Charles issued an apology in a statement to E! News. “I'm truly sorry for making inconsiderate comments several years ago and apologize to anyone I hurt,” he said. “What I posted and said was immature, offensive and inappropriate. I am ashamed of how I acted and there is no excuse for that behavior.”

He concluded his apology by saying, “I'm striving to do better and will use this experience to grow, helping others to understand how these types of statements are completely unacceptable.”

Riverdale fans are justifiably furious with the actor with some even calling for him to be replaced next season. “Instead of killing off Reggie Mantle in S3, let's just replace Charles Melton with Ross Butler again. The producers did it once. They can easily do it again. If the Riverdale team decides to ignore this issue, then they are no better. I will drop ALL OF THEM,” one person wrote.

Charles made his Twitter private following the backlash, which fans didn't exactly appreciate. However, now that he's apologized, perhaps things will simmer down. Some fans have since defended Charles and others are even ready to forgive him. They pointed out that he was 21 years old when the comments were made and maybe he's not the same person he was all those years ago.

Considering his fellow Riverdale castmates Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes have both become known for promoting body positivity, this is yet another reason why fans are not happy with Charles. Just last month, Lili had to slam rumors that she was pregnant due to an unflattering photo that went viral. She and Camila have both called attention to Hollywood's insane beauty standards and have used their platform to encourage women to accept and love the bodies they have.

While we agree that Charles may have grown up in the last seven years, it doesn't excuse the fact that he made those comments. Let's hope he learned his lesson, especially since Charles, along with his co-star Vanessa Morgan, were promoted to series regulars on Riverdale season three.
