Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz’s upcoming film Disobedience is already getting rave reviews for its accurate portrayal of lesbian love, and now the main actresses have opened up about what it was like to film their sex scenes together. Considering McAdamshas had sex scenes with Hollywood's hottest men, including Ryan Gosling in The Notebook (whom she was dating at the time), she said one was very different in all the right ways. In fact, she said her sex scene with her female co-star was the BEST she's ever had.

“Often, you’re trying to decide if it’s gratuitous or not. But this scene felt so integral to the plot and moving the story forward. The characters need this release to open up,” McAdams told Entertainment Weekly, adding that she felt something she's never experienced with a male actor. “There was energy to that scene that I haven’t experienced in any other sex scenes in my career.”

However, it was more than just a different energy, there was also a feeling of “camaraderie” to it. “We both felt safe and free,” she continued. “All those things that you love about being a woman, you get to be [in the scene], so I understand the attraction and appeal to that in a sexual context.”

Meanwhile, Weisz said there were some notable difference between performing a sex scene with a woman versus one with a man. “The only thing that was particular to it was as I mentioned was normally as you do a sex scene it’s kind of freestyle. You get in the bed and, in my case, it’s always with men and you see what happens. It can come out a bit meaningless and generalize,” she said.

Weisz, who plays Ronit, also opened up about the importance of Esti's (McAdams's character) orgasm in the scene. “In that moment, Esti’s orgasm is both a sexual release and a metaphorical release to freedom. It’s like she’s free to find out who she really is,” she explained to EW.

Based on the film's trailer and most reviews, McAdams and Weisz's performances are impeccable, showing sides to their talents that we've never seen before.

The movie is an adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s novel of the same name, and it takes inspiration from her own experiences growing up in an Orthodox Jewish community. The film tells the story of a former Orthodox Jewish woman named Ronit who returns to her community after the death of her father. During her stay, she reconnects with her childhood friend Esti, with whom she was in love. Ronit finds out that Esti married a man in order to remain in the community. However, that doesn't stop their romance from reigniting as they try to connect their faith and sexuality.

Disobedience opens in theaters on this Friday, April 27.
