Everything You Missed In Pop Culture This Presidents Day Weekend: Black Panther Is Reigning King

By  |

Celebrities don’t ever seem to take a break from scandals and drama. But then again, if they did, we’d have nothing to read about! Don’t worry though, since you were busy this Presidents Day weekend hitting all of your favorite stores to snag the best deals, then binge-watching One Tree Hill on Hulu or going to the theater to see Black Panther, we managed to round up all of the important pop culture stories that you need to know from over the 2/17 – 2/19 weekend. As per usual, it was a busy one in Tinseltown!

Black Panther blew up the box office

The numbers are in and Black Panther is King. It’s always expected that Marvel movies will have successful opening weekends, but the success of Black Panther is unprecedented. It’s now historical and the film has broken various records. Over the three-day holiday weekend, Black Panther pulled in $235 million dollars domestically and over $400 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Black Panther is now the fifth highest opening weekend of all time, coming in after Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jurassic World, and Marvel’s The Avengers. The film blew past every expectation and prediction at the box office that was previously made, as it was originally estimated to bring in just $100 to $120 million (which still would have been a huge success). It nearly doubled that.

The movie is now the highest-grossing opening for a February film and for Presidents Day weekend (kicking Deadpool off of its throne). It’s also the top-grossing film from a black director as well, so Black Panther and Ryan Coogler really have just broken every barrier possible. If you haven’t seen the film yet, check out our spoiler-free review to see why you need to go ASAP.

But because not everyone has the means to go see Black Panther, many celebrities took it upon themselves to make sure those who wanted to view it would be able to. This MCU flick has been successful financially, but also on a cultural level, as it is the first chance that many black children can see superheroes, male and female, to look up to and see themselves in. Kendrick Lamar, the mind behind the film’s soundtrack, purchased tickets at three different theaters to help children see Black Panther during opening weekend. Along with Kendrick, Black Panther‘s star Chadwick Boseman paid for children to see the movie, Octavia Spencer bought out a theater, and Brie Larson helped people fund others’ tickets on a Twitter thread. A New York-based philanthropist, Frederick Joseph, called for the #BlackPantherChallenge to raise $40,000 to help children in Harlem see the film. Once celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, Serena Williams, T.I., Snoop Dogg, and more heard about it, they donated to help the cause hit their goal.

Fergie performed the national anthem and it was weird

It was not a great weekend for Fergie. On Sunday night, before the NBA All-Star game at the Staples Center in LA, she performed the national anthem. If you’ve ever heard Fergie sing before that night, then you know she has a good voice. She might not have the same range as Mariah Carey, but she is always entertaining. Well, she decided to give the classic song a “sexy” rendition and it was not well received. On Twitter (and virtually the entire internet at this point) her version of the national anthem has been dubbed the “worst ever,” some even saying it is worse than Roseanne Barr‘s (Rosie performed it famously in 1990 at a baseball game between the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds). The internet roasted the hell out of the poor Black Eyed Peas singer for her version, with people screenshotting the faces of the basketball players behind her, suggesting that even they could not keep it together during her performance.

After a full day of heckling, Fergie issued a statement, “I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA. I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly, this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.” Poor Fergie!

Kate Middleton didn’t wear black to the BAFTA Awards and it caused some drama

She might be royalty, but this Duchess isn’t free from criticism. In fact, being in the spotlight 24/7, Kate Middleton has often come under critical review. This time, it was her apparent decision to skip out of the Time’s Up dress code at the BAFTA Awards. Back in January, stars wore black on the red carpet in support of the Time’s Up initiative (which stands against the mistreatment and abuse of women in Hollywood and beyond) on the Golden Globe’s carpet. This dress code was in effect again for the BAFTA Awards over the weekend.

Kate and her husband, Prince William, attended the BAFTA Awards and all eyes were on Kate. She wore a deep green cap-sleeved Jenny Packham gown, but when people online saw that Kate hadn’t worn black, they quickly took to Twitter to call her out, though the number of people attacking her was probably equal to the number of women supporting her. Royals typically do not get involved in political movements, in fact, it’s against royal protocol to speak out about these matters. However, considering Price Harry and Meghan Markle have said they’re feminists, perhaps it wouldn’t have been against the rules for her to have shown her support. Some thought her black sash and bag were a subtle nod to the movement, but others were simply not happy that she wasn’t involved with the dress code.

Ansel Elgort became an uncle & he couldn’t be prouder

Our favorite The Fault in Our Stars hottie just became an uncle! Is there anything cuter than a hot guy holding a baby? We think not. Ansel Elgort took to social media to share his excitement over the new baby joining his family. The actor’s older sister, Sophie Elgort, just welcomed her first child, Stella, and Stella’s uncle Ansel is beaming. He shared two photos of him holding his precious niece, as well as a sweet video. A few weeks before his sister gave birth, Ansel shared a pregnant photo of Sophie on his Instagram with this excited caption, “MY BIG SISTER IS GONNA HAVE A BABY ANY MINUTE. The miracle of life. Can’t wait to be Uncle.” Congrats to the entire family on their newest addition!

Ryan Reynolds shared some heartfelt Make A Wish moments & took down a troll

Ryan Reynolds is the king of social media. He also has one of the biggest hearts on this planet. He’s always used his fame as a way to interact with his fans and over the last few years, we’ve gotten to see it first hand after all the success of his film Deadpool. Ryan shared some sweet photos of children who were able to meet him through the Make A Wish foundation. Ryan posted on Instagram, with the caption, “One of the best parts of playing the Big Red Jackass is welcoming @makeawishamerica and @childrenswishfoundation onto set. Deadpool kicked Cancer in the taint, but these kids do it for real every day. These foundations make dreams come true for a lot of of super-brave kids. They also make dreams come true for parents, who just wanna see their kid smile. HUGE thanks to our Prop Master, Dan Sissons, for making sure every kid left with his/her own sword. (Bamboo versions. Not stabby-stabby versions.).” Most of the world hit “like” in a heartbeat when they saw this post, but one troll commented saying children shouldn’t be watching an R-rated movie. Ryan was quick to hit back, saying that after everything these sick children have been through, they can watch whatever they please. TRUE.
