If you’re a ’90s kid, then chances are you either loved *NSYNC or the Backstreet Boys. There was no loving both equally – everyone had to take a side. Which is why when rumors were going around that the boys were feuding, it was juicy as hell. While many said the feud was simply a publicity stunt, others were fairly certain there was some serious drama going on behind closed doors. Well, now we FINALLY have the answers we’ve been wanting for years. It turns out, the beef all came down to the love of a woman! Typical.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of *NSYNC’s debut album, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, JC Chasez, and Chris Kirkpatrick sat down for an interview with Billboard magazine. Yes, there’s a lot we could say about Justin Timberlake’s ~inability~ to be there, but that’s a rant for another day. Four-fifths of the group took us on a trip down memory lane, all the way back to the beginning of their careers, and they finally let us in on what went on behind-the-scenes. For example, Chris and BSB’s AJ McLean dated the same girl at one point.

“I wanted to punch AJ’s lights out for a little while. I was dating a girl, I broke up with her and he started dating her. And I guess he was talking smack to her about me, so I confronted him on it and wanted to kick his ass,” Chris recalled, adding that he doesn’t remember how it all got resolved. “I saw him out one night and said I wanted to kill him, but I said, ‘Let’s get a beer.'”

“I think boy band fights are in the same realm as hockey fights. You fight when you’re on TV, but then when you’re not, you get a beer together. Now we’re really good friends,” he continued.

We can’t believe all of this is only coming out now! Can you imagine the tabloid headlines if this bro-fight over the love of a woman came out during the bands’ peak?! Aside from dating the same girls, the former boybanders were also at odds when it came to their music. But according to Joey, it was just “friendly competition” and not so much a rivalry like we all thought.

“To us, there wasn’t a competition. We just thought we needed to be the best,” he said. “To them, there was, because they came out and we came out, and they’re like, ‘Man, we have to be better than them!'”

In fact, it was because of BSB that *NSYNC got their break in the industry. The men revealed that they struggled to gain a following in the U.S. up until the day BSB decided not to perform a Disney concert.

Apparently, BSB dropped out of the concert because it was around the time Brian Littrell needed heart surgery, so *NSYNC’s manager offered them up instead and the rest is history. In other words, had BSB performed, *NSYNC might not have ever been the successful boy band we know and love today.

“We say it all the time, I even said it to Howie [Dorough, of BSB] — ‘Thank you for saying no,'” Joey joked. TBH, we’re thankful too because we got to enjoy not one, but two epic boy bands!
