What You Missed In Pop Culture This Weekend: Sarah Hyland, J-Law & More Made Headlines
While you were busy de-stressing from the real world this weekend, Hollywood was abuzz. Celebrities don't ever seem to take a break from scandals and drama. But then again, if they did, we'd have nothing to read about! Don't worry though, since you were busy this weekend decorating for the holidays or snagging all the deals at the mall, we managed to round up all of the important pop culture stories that you need to know from the weekend. Fair Warning: Spoilers for The Walking Dead ahead!
The winter finale of The Walking Dead had a huge shocker
— The Walking Dead AMC (@WalkingDead_AMC) December 11, 2017
Now, if you haven't watched the latest episode of The Walking Dead (from December 10, 2017) we'd recommend scrolling down to avoid spoilers. If you did watch, you are welcome here to either cry or rejoice, depending on how you feel about the episode's turn of events. In usual fashion, everything goes to hell in TWD's mid-season finale. Sure enough, this was the case last night. Carl Grimes revealed to his dad that he'd been bitten by a walker a few episodes prior. As any TWD fan knows, if you're bitten, you will turn.
In case you thought Rick and Carl might find a way, actor Chandler Riggs has put that thought to rest. “Yes, Carl is going to die,” Chandler told The Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive interview. “There's no way he can get back from that. His story is definitely coming to an end.” Carl will be back for the mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead, which airs February 25, 2018. Now, fans have always been split (or heavily against) on how they feel about Carl. We'll see how everyone feels when he actually dies on the show!
Celebrities show their support for bullied teen from viral video
Stay strong, Keaton. Don’t let them make you turn cold. I promise it gets better. While those punks at your school are deciding what kind of people they want to be in this world, how would you and your mom like to come to the Avengers premiere in LA next year? https://t.co/s1QwCQ3toi
— Chris Evans (@ChrisEvans) December 10, 2017
Many celebrities used their huge social media platforms to shed light on the effects of bullying and send their love to a bullied teen that was brave enough to speak out. You might have noticed the name Keaton Jones trending this weekend but had no idea who that was. Keaton is a middle school student from Tennesee that is in a now-viral video. Posted by his mother Kimberly, Keaton asks why people bully others. Tearfully, he asks why bullies want to be mean to innocent people. He goes on to detail some truly horrific acts of bullying that he's faced at school.
The video quickly picked up steam online and celebrities all over the globe have responded with overwhelming support for Keaton. Chris Evans shared words of support and encouragement for Keaton, and he even invited Keaton to the Avengers: Infinity War premiere in 2018. Fellow Avenger Mark Ruffalo told Keaton that he had the Hulk's support. Stranger Things superstar Millie Bobbie Brown wrote to Keaton, “Keaton, this is so accurate. Why do people do this? I think your sooo cool Keaton! I wanna be your friend ( but srsly) ur freakin awesome.” Rihanna posted a photo of Keaton, in which he is posed and smiling, and said, “#KeatonJones Hero!!! Thank you young KING for inspiring us all who have been in your shoes at any capacity! If you have, or currently are going through any form of bullying, my heart and my prayers go out to you! Bullies…y'all corny!” Other celebrities like Ryan Seacrest, Todd Chrisley, Cardi B, Kevin Jonas, Hailee Steinfeld, and many more have also tweeted, posted on Instagram, or Facebook to send their kind words to Keaton.
Dark Phoenix first look + J.Law is coming back to X-Men
In case you missed it, last week in all the hustle and bustle of “end of the week madness” we got our first look at Dark Phoenix, AKA Jean Grey's epic storyline from X-Men. While we did get a glimpse at Jean's battle with her inner demons and control over her power in X-Men: The Last Stand, we all know how misguided that film was. Sophie Turner stepped into the role of a young Jean Grey for X-Men: Apocalypse and that was just the beginning of it. Dark Phoenix will be set in 1992, which is roughly ten years after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse took place. The film will feature the X-Men, Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), in a new, unexpected role: national heroes.
Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) is even featured on the cover of Time, but apparently, his ego is going to get to his head. There had been doubts that J-Law would return to the franchise, as her contract was up after X-Men: Apocalypse and she really is not a fan of the process of turning blue to portray Mystique.
But she admits the real reason she came back was that her friend, Simon Kinberg, is the director. Once he was set to direct, she knew she had to be in it. But that's not all! She revealed, “I felt like I owed it to the fans, and I owed it to the character to follow her journey, to be fair to the movies, and not be like, ‘I don't want to do another X-Men!' And then I just never show up and everyone's very confused about the Mystique they've been following for the last three films.”
Joe Manganiello and Sophia Vergara are #CoupleGoals
Is there anything sweeter than two people who are so unbelievably in love that they can't help but shout it from the rooftops? Joe Manganiello and his wife Sofia Vergara are no strangers to PDA. The couple is quite public with their declarations of love and this weekend was no different. As this Hollywood couple often does, they attended a red carpet together over the weekend. Joe posted numerous photos on Instagram, sharing his excitement for attending the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. While the photos just seemed like an excited fan sharing his time online, there was a secret message hidden in his suit. Sofia revealed that Joe had “I love Sofia” stitched into the collar of his Peyman Umay suit. Honestly, could these two get any cuter?!
Sarah Hyland & Wells Adams got their first Christmas tree together
Sofia Vergara isn't the only Modern Family star defining couple goals these days! Sarah Hyland is sharing her love life with the world again! After a public breakup with Shadowhunter‘s star Dominic Sherwood earlier this year, Sarah has been a little bit more private about her personal life and understandably so! But we've still gotten a glimpse of this Modern Family star's whirlwind romance with Bachelorette contestant Wells Adams through Instagram pics and vids and their snapshot of this weekend just might be their cutest post yet.
The new couple is getting festive, as they just got their first Christmas tree together! Sarah snapped a photo of the tree on her Instagram, but also shared some sweet moments while she and her BF decorated together throughout the day. We're so happy to see Sarah happy and enjoying the holidays!
Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise surprised New York by introducing Taylor Swift at Jingle Ball
Now that Reputation is out, Taylor Swift is back in the public eye in a big way. She's currently playing in iHeartMedia's holiday shows across the country, one of the most recent stops on the trip being Z100's Jingle Ball in New York City. Taylor surely must have been happy to be home and was even spotted out with her boo, Joe Alwyn, after the show.
While fans were ready to see Taylor perform, they got a huge surprise. Katie Holmes and her daughter, Suri Cruise, made a rare joint public appearance at the show. The mom-and-daughter duo introduced Taylor to the crowd. This choice isn't totally random considering that Taylor and Katie have actually worked together in the past, but getting to see 11-year-old Suri announce one of her fave artists is awesome. You may remember that Katie starred in 2014's The Giver, in which T.Swift had a small role. It is so sweet to see Katie and her daughter having so much fun together!
That's all for this week’s installment of This Weekend in Pop Culture, stay tuned for a new one next Monday. Because while celebs may go stale, you can count on the gossip to always stay fresh.
