As per usualy, it was a busy one in Tinseltown!
Ed Sheeran is engaged
Sorry ladies and gents, Ed Sheeran is very much off the market! Over the weekend, the Brit announced he was engaged to his long-time girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn. The singer posted on Instagram to announce his good news, revealing he'd secretly been engaged for weeks after getting engaged before the New Year.
In 2016, Ed told Zane Lowe from Beats 1, “This has been the first time I've ever actually had the time to fall in love properly. I've always got into relationships very passionately – I'm a redhead and also Irish. I'm ready, let's go – tour bus babies, little fat, chubby babies that just walk around.”
Ed and Cherry met when they were in school, but didn't begin dating until 2015. His amazing song that played at every wedding in 2017, “Perfect,” was inspired by his relationship with his new fiancé. He told Us Weekly, “I didn't see her first reaction to the song because she lived in New York at the time. So I just emailed it to her, but she did really like it.”
But it's not all good news — apparently Ed might retire from music once they start a family!
All your favorite celebs were at the Women’s March and Scarlett Johansson called out James Franco
This weekend, powerful women around the world his the streets for the Women's March. Among those women (along with many supportive men) were some of our favorite celebrities. Apparently, Adele, Cameron Diaz, and Jennifer Lawrence are the new celebrity BFFs to watch out for! Other celebrities like Sophia Bush, Alyssa Milano, Halsey, Mila Kunis, and her hubby Ashton Kutcher marched for women's rights and equality, as a protest against President Donald Trump's policies on the one-year anniversary of his inauguration.
Among the hundreds of thousands who marched, Scarlett Johansson was there, and she had some choice words for James Franco. While giving a speech during the Women's March in Los Angeles, ScarJo voiced her opinion on James Franco. “In light of the recent revelations regarding abuse of power, and sexual harassment, and the question of consent versus coercion, I find myself pensive, taking time, and digging deep to understand where we are, and how we got here. My mind baffles. How could a person publicly stand by an organization that helps to provide support for victims of sexual assault, while privately preying on people who have no power? I want my pin back, by the way.” She did not directly say the Disaster Artist actor's name, but her rep confirmed to People that James Franco is who she was referring to. The buuuuurrrrnnnn.
Aly Raisman joined the athletes confronting Larry Nassar in court during victim impact statements
Last week, victims began delivering their impact statements in court to their accused abuser, Larry Nassar. Larry is already facing 60 years in prison for charges of child porn and now is in the midst of his second sentencing for 12 cases of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Over 140 women have come forward to accuse the USA Gymnastics doctor of molesting them when they were minors. Several former USA Gymnasts, Olympians and athletes treated at Michigan State University and Twistars USA Gymnastics Club have come forward to accuse Larry Nassar of sexually assault. Some victims were as young as six years old at the time of their abuse, and many say it lasted for years under his so-called care. Some of these accounts of sexual assault date back 30 years now.
Gold medalist gymnasts Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas, and Simone Biles have come forward against Larry. Of those USA Olympic gymnasts, Aly Raisman was the first to speak out in court. She gave a lengthy, powerful speech that has now been heard around the world.
One of the most impacting parts of her speech is when she said, “Larry, you do realize now that we, this group of women you so heartlessly abused over such a long period of time, are now a force and you are nothing. The tables have turned, Larry. We have our voices, and we are not going anywhere.” Many of the abused victims are suing various parties involved in keeping Larry Nassar in his position of power for as long as he was including USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic Committee.
Nicole Kidman won her first SAG Award and called out ageism in Hollywood
Nicole Kidman has pretty much swept awards season! After winning an Emmy in September 2017, then a Golden Globe, and the Critics Choice Award, she now has brought home the SAG Award. She won for outstanding performance by a female actor for her role in HBO's drama Big Little Lies, which she starred in with Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgård, and Zoë Kravitz. The 50-year-old actress has been nominated ten times before, but this was her first-ever SAG Award win. She thanked the SAG-AFTRA for the award and said she's been working since she was 14 years old. She then went on to thank many seasoned actresses, like Susan Sarandon, Jessica Lange, and Meryl Streep.
In her speech, she went on to call out ageism for women in Hollywood. Nicole said, “Twenty years ago, we were pretty washed up by this stage in our lives. That's not the case now. We've proven that we are potent and powerful and viable!”
The Stranger Things cast slayed the SAG Awards red carpet
Even though Stranger Things didn't take home any of the awards the show was nominated for, the cast still had a big night. Ever since the show debuted in 2016, the young cast of the show has shot into superstardom. Each child actor has millions of followers on Instagram who follow their every move. Millie Bobby Brown has been one of the standout stars of the show and with reason. She is poised, well spoken, and a great role model for girls her age and every age — honestly. After actors hit the red carpet of the SAG Awards, the younger cast members of Stranger Things were all everyone could talk about! Millie rocked space buns and Converse sneakers, while Sadie Sink looked glam in Chanel. Natalia Dyer slayed in Dior while one of her on-screen boyfriends, Joe Keery, acted as her date. Sadly, Finn Wolfhard was home sick with the flu. Feel better, Noah!
The Jersey Shore reunion is underway
It's T-Shirt time! Get ready to pump both of your fists, because the Jersey Shore crew is back in action. Six years after the finale aired on TV, the “fam” has gotten back together for Jersey Shore: Family Vacation. The group is definitely ready to get their GTL on. This reunion won't be taking place in their beloved New Jersey, but instead in Miami, Florida. Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, Jenni “JWoww” Farley, Pauly D, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Vinny Guadagnino, and Deena Cortese are all returning for this reunion.
The only cast member (besides the unwelcome Angelina of course) to not come back is Sammi Giancola, due to her past rocky relationship with her ex, Ronnie. Even though Sammi isn't returning, the Jersey Shore family is pumped for their reunion and filming is officially underway. The reunion series will air on MTV later in 2018.
Darren Criss is engaged
This weekend was clearly the weekend to announce engagements! Just like Ed Sheeran did, Darren Criss shared his engagement news on Instagram. The former Glee actor and star of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is engaged to his long-time girlfriend, Mia Swier. The couple has been together since 2010 but didn't actually confirm their relationship until after Darren rose to fame in 2013. In Darren's Instagram post, he said, “Mia and I have had seven and a half years of fun, wacky, wonderful, CRAZY adventures together. And I’m happy to announce that we’re kicking those adventures up a notch. We’re goin for it. To boldly go where neither of us have gone before. Engage.” Congrats to the happy couple on their new adventure together!
That's all for this week’s installment of This Weekend in Pop Culture, stay tuned for a new one next Monday. Because while celebs may go stale, you can count on the gossip to always stay fresh.
