Melissa Joan Hart Finally Weighs in on Sabrina the Teenage Witch Reboot
After news broke out that the creators of Riverdale were interested in remaking Sabrina the Teenage Witch, fans have been patiently waiting to hear what Melissa Joan Hart had to say about it. The time has come because the actress finally shared her thoughts on the reboot. So, how does the OG Sabrina Spellman feel about Netflix's new and much darker adaptation?
“Indifferent, really,” Melissa told Entertainment Weekly. “People kept asking for it, and they were already doing Riverdale, so I guess it made sense. I think they're doing it in a smart way – change it up, don't make it the same. If you're going to do the same show, it probably would fall on its face, but I think what they're doing is probably the smartest way to reboot something.”
That was honest, yet very mature of her to say. She has a point. The Untitled Sabrina Project will be nothing like the one she starred in. If you're expecting the new Sabrina to be anything like the lovable character Melissa made famous in the late '90s, then you're going to be very disappointed.
She also said she thought it would be a bit more like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and can we just say we are SO down for that?!
“Back in the day, it used to be that you took something that was successful and you did a twist on it,” she said. “Nowadays, everybody is just doing the same old stuff again. I think [TV reboots] is a trend that will end, but then again, I said that with reality television, too, so who knows.”
As for whether Melissa is interested in a role in the reboot, she said she's not opposed to the idea. However, it would all depend on what character she'd be offered.
“Never say never, but it would depend on the character they wrote,” she said. “I just don’t know where I would fit in. I would definitely take a look at the material if they sent it along.”
That means there a chance! We'll take it. There's nothing we love more than the idea of seeing an OG cast member appearing in a reboot. It just gives the show a feeling a completeness. Regardless, we feel happy to know that Melissa isn't opposed to the remake. Though she didn't comment on Kiernan Shipka playing the character she made famous, it would be cool to see both Sabrinas on screen together.
News of the Mad Men star's casting has made fans very happy since she's one of the few actresses they were rooting for. Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (also the Riverdale showrunner, said of the casting, “This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
Just last week, Sabrina's best friend was cast as well, which means everything is going according to plan. Actress Jaz Sinclair, who previously appeared on another CW show, The Vampire Diaries as one of Bonnie Bennett's witchy ancestors, will play Rosalind Walker from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Considering she has some experience with the supernatural, it makes her the perfect fit as the teenage witch's BFF.
We are so excited! We also can't wait for Netflix to announce the show's premiere date!
