Jennifer Lopez Opens Up About Her Own #MeToo Moment
Like countless other women in Hollywood, Jennifer Lopez has a #MeToo story of her own – and she shared it in a new interview with Harper's Bazaar. The actress and singer revealed she had been sexually harassed by a director during the early stages of her acting career. Though she acknowledges that her experience isn't like what many other women had to go through, she was still affected by it.
“I haven’t been abused in the way some women have,” she said. “But have I been told by a director to take off my shirt and show my boobs? Yes, I have. But did I do it? No, I did not.”
Though she didn't reveal the name of the director or the movie, Jennifer said the incident occurred on one of her very first films, adding that she was scared to fight back.
“When I did speak up, I was terrified,” Jennifer continued. “I remember my heart beating out of my chest, thinking, ‘What did I do? This man is hiring me!’ It was one of my first movies. But in my mind, I knew the behavior wasn’t right. It could have gone either way for me.”
“But I think ultimately the Bronx in me was like, ‘Nah, we’re not having it,'” she added.
Jennifer is one of a string of women to share their experiences of harassment and assault in Hollywood in the wake of allegations made against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. Other actresses like Salma Hayek, Ashley Judd, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rose McGowan, Cara Delevingne, and many others have all come forward in recent months to share their stories, too.
Elsewhere in Jennifer's Harper’s interview, she dished about her relationship with baseball star Alex Rodriguez and whether she would consider tying the knot again. The two have been together since March 2017 and do no show any signs of slowing down.
“I do believe in marriage,” she explained. “And I would love to grow old with somebody in a committed relationship. But I’m not forcing anything right now. It’s good, it’s healthy; we communicate well. We understand each other’s lives in a way that most other people couldn’t. We both entered the public eye in our early 20s and overachieved right from the start. And that affects every dynamic in your life, from your family to your work to your relationships. We have a similar makeup.”
Jennifer is clearly living her best life and she said one of her secrets is lots of affirmations. “I am youthful and timeless. I tell myself that every day, a few times a day. It sounds like clichéd bullsh*t, but it’s not: Age is all in your mind. Look at Jane Fonda,” she said.
