Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder Cast in Another Vampire Show

Just in case you've been missing seeing Ian Somerhalder in action as a vampire on The Vampire Diaries, don't worry — he's back in another show about the blood-craving creatures. Its official: Ian will star in Netflix's V-Wars, yet another show about vampires. But don't worry, because his role this time around is definitely different from Damon Salvatore and we want the actor to branch out just a little at least!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ian has signed on to star as Dr. Luther Swann, who “enters a world of horror when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend, Michael Fayne, into a murderous predator who feeds on other humans” on V-Wars. The series — which has already received a ten-episode season order from Netflix — is based on a graphic novel of the same name written by Jonathan Maberry. Ian's character will be the one who tries to understand what's going on while finding a way to stop it as the world seems to go crazy, pitting those who have turned into vampires against those who haven't.

“We could not have dreamed of a better choice than Ian Somerhalder to bring his keen understanding of this genre from his years of starring in The Vampire Diaries to lead the cast of V-Wars as Dr. Luther Swann and to be a creative force on this series, as well as to serve as a director this season,” said a statement on the show given to THR. “We are thrilled to partner with Netflix to bring the multifaceted world that Jonathan Maberry created to audiences worldwide.”

Ooh, a “creative force”? That sounds like Ian will be pretty involved with the show even beyond starring on it, which will definitely be interesting for fans to see once the show finally does hit Netflix.

And speaking of hitting Netflix? The streaming service has yet to announce a premiere date, but being that it sounds like the show is in the very early stages, it could be a while before we get to stream V-Wars… but something tells us it will be worth the wait. We already know that Ian can navigate a vampire-laden environment, but last time, he was the vampire. This time, we get to see him in a totally new capacity.

It'll be interesting to see the actor/director in this role, especially since almost a year has gone by since The Vampire Diaries ended. Knowing Netflix, V-Wars definitely has a shot at being a truly quality show. Bring it on!
