Just in case you were under the impression that it’s okay to criticize anyone for the way their body looks, a certain model is here to shut that all down. On Sunday, Gigi Hadid slammed body shamers who have been commenting on her “overly skinny” figure, explaining the reason for her weight fluctuation in the process.

Gigi recently shared a few photos on Instagram from New York Fashion Week, and the supermodel’s response comes after some people chose to comment on how thin she looks. As Gigi writes in her tweets, she hasn’t been trying to lose weight — the difference in her appearance is actually due to the fact that she was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease in the early days of her modeling career and is now able to treat it properly. According to WebMD, Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the thyroid. Symptoms include weight gain and puffiness in your face, so it makes sense that once Gigi was able to treat the disease, she shed a few pounds.

The good news: It definitely doesn’t sound like fans need to be worried about Gigi’s condition since she says she’s healthy these days. The bad news: She has to keep dealing with people commenting on her weight. When she first got into the fashion industry, she was consistently slammed by haters saying she was “too big” to be a model – now, she’s got hate on the other side of the spectrum.

“For those of you so determined to come up w why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started @ 17 I was not yet diagnosed w/Hashimoto’s disease; those of u who called me ‘too big for the industry’ were seeing inflammation & water retention due to that,” she wrote. “Over the last few years I’ve been properly medicated to help symptoms including those, as well as extreme fatigue, metabolism issues, body’s ability to retain heat, etc … I was also part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out.”

Now, this is where she really puts the trolls in their place. Once she was done explaining what had been up with her body over the last few years, she took the opportunity to make one thing very clear. Despite the fact that, yes, she looks different, and no, it’s not exactly how she’d prefer her body to look, it’s time to end the shaming for once and for all.

Then, Gigi urged her followers not to judge others and try to understand that there’s more to their story than what you see on the surface. Like in Gigi’s case, it would have been impossible to know that she was suffering from health issues that led to her change in appearance. Why would it be any different with anyone else? That’s a solid enough reason not to shame people because of the way they look… you know, aside from the fact that it’s straight up rude, too.

It can’t be easy for Gigi to live with a constant stream of judgemental comments, but she’s kicking butt anyway. Just be nice to each other, guys — it’s really the best way to live.
