New Charmed Cast Wants Fans To Know The Reboot Is Not A “Rip-Off”
The CW’s Charmed reboot will debut in less than three months, but the upcoming series has been plagued by a bit of controversy since it was first announced. Fans of the original Charmed have their doubts, but the reboot’s new sister trio, Melonie Diaz, Sarah Jeffery, Madeleine Mantock, want to assure fans that the updated version is not a rip-off of the OG.
“We’re new characters living in a world. It’s a new set of witches who’ve discovered they have powers. I think it’s maybe a misconception to say it’s a rip-off,” Madeleine told Us Weekly. “I saw somebody yesterday describe it as a tribute to [the original] and I thought that was quite nice.”
They’re referring to the fact that some fans hoped the reboot would pick where the OG series left off. You may recall that in the last episode, all three sisters had children, which means that the new series could have definitely focused on the next generation of Halliwells. Fans argue that this would have left room for Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, and Rose McGowan to make appearances in the new show. Holly’s been pretty vocal that she doesn’t feel welcome. However, before we rule out a cameo situation, the new cast said they’re still hopeful the ladies might come back.
They revealed that while they haven’t spoken to any of the women, some of them have shown them support. “Rose, I know was [supportive],” Sarah said before Madeleine added, “She said, ‘Fly girls fly’ and that was so kind of her to say that. It was really nice.”
We’re glad at least one of the OG stars is pro-reboot. On the other hand, Holly’s claimed on several occasions that the new series is “capitalizing” on all of her, Shannen Doherty, Rose, and Alyssa’s hard work. Her comments caused fans to take sides, which resulted in a lot of negativity for the reboot’s new stars. But, although Madeleine, Sarah, and Melonie understand where fans are coming from, they’d still like a chance.
“Everyone’s allowed their own opinion and I think it’s a testament to how much fans really love and cherished Charmed for what it is,” Madeleine acknowledged before adding, “And there are lots of people who are really excited for it. So I’ve got my ears open to them and I’m hoping we can turn some people on to it as well because I do, I think it’s a really good show.”
The OG Charmed will always have a special place in our hearts, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be excited about the reboot. The faces may have changed, but the premise is most definitely the same. It’s always going to be about a love story between sisters and how much power women have when they come together. Now, more than ever, we need a show that’s about women kicking ass.
Charmed premieres on Sunday, October 14, at 9 PM ET on The CW! While we wait for fall to roll around, check out the trailer for the reboot in the video below!
