After sweeping the Golden Globes last night, fan are definitely excited to see what’s in store for the second season of Big Little Lies! It turns out, season two will introduce a new character to the mix – and she may or may not cause big trouble for Nicole Kidman‘s character, Celeste. “Well there’s a new character coming,” executive producer Jean Marc Vallée, who directed the show’s first season, told Entertainment Tonight. “Perry’s mother, that’s all I can say.”

Big Little Lies fans will remember that Perry, played by Alexander Skarsgård, was killed after Zoë Kravitz character, Bonnie, pushed him down a flight of stairs. Other than the fact that Perry is an abusive husband, we don’t know that much about him. It’ll be interesting to see how the show introduces his mother. Will she come to Monterey to confront Celeste? Or maybe she’ll come looking for answers and find out her son was a monster. She might also just appear in flashbacks if the show is looking to give viewers a look into Perry’s past. The possibilities are endless…

But, Perry’s mom isn’t the only parent who will appear in Big Little Lies season two! Bonnie’s parents will also show up to answer a few questions regarding her motivation behind killing Perry. Fans have petitioned to have Zoë’s real-life parents, Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, take on the new roles.

Most of the season one cast is expected to return, with Nicole, Zoë, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Adam Scott still negotiating the terms of their contract. Alexander Skarsgård said on the Golden Globes red carpet he wasn’t sure what the plan is with his character — so that leaves a major question mark.

As for why the original director isn’t coming back after all the success of the first season, it’s because he has other contractual obligations. Season two of Big Little Lies wasn’t confirmed until recently, so Vallée took on other projects. However, that doesn’t mean he won’t help out the new director, Andrea Arnold.

“It broke my heart too, but at least I’m there to support Andrea and she’s an amazing director,” he said. “I’ll be there, you know, to follow the project and to try to help, you know, from a distance, being respectful. But David Kelley and the girls, they came up with some great ideas – you’ll see.”

Season two of Big Little Lies is expected to consist of seven episodes, however, the official release date has yet to be confirmed. We should probably only expect it to air sometime 2019 since they haven’t even started filming yet, but we’ve got our fingers crossed that it’s sooner!

What we know for sure is that HBO promises more even more lies and more secrets next season than in the first. The network describes the new season saying, “The subversive, darkly comedic drama Big Little Lies will explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode… the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.”

One thing is for sure though – if season two is anything like season one, then we should expect the cast and crew to be upstage at the 2020 Golden Globes as well.

Big Little Lies took home four Golden Globes this year: best television limited series/motion picture made for television, as well as best actress (Nicole Kidman), best supporting actress (Laura Dern), and best supporting actor (Alexander Skarsgård).
