Jada Pinkett Smith Should’ve Predicted Her ‘Oops’ Baby Willow Smith Would Be An Internet-Savvy Superstar When She Gave This Interview In 2000

Following in her precocious kids' footsteps, Jada Pinkett Smith is expanding her online presence by joining Instagram. Of course, we welcome it because she's been posting photos of her kids Jaden and Willow when they were babies, and really darn cute. As we discussed yesterday, Jada was quite an interesting young mom fifteen years ago, when she was friends with Tupac Shakur and had no idea that the little babies she would soon bring into the world would someday be headlining sold-out tours and thrilling millions of Twitter followers with their avant garde hairstyles and fashion sense.

In addition to these photos, Hollywood Hiccups also unearthed this interview Jada did with Fit Pregnancy circa 2000, when she was seven months pregnant with Willow. Reading it, I had to wonder if she ever realistically thought her daughter would read it someday. Not that she says anything damning, but she's very candid about Willow's conception:

FP: Were you trying to get pregnant, or is this an “oops” baby?

JPS: An oops baby. I was starting to wean Jaden, and I’d only had one cycle, so I thought I had some time. Then I got my surprise.

Again, not unusual. I myself am the product of my mom taking antibiotics while on birth control, and one clearly cancelling out the other. The fact that Jada and husband Will Smith didn't abort Willow indicates that while she was a surprise, she was wanted. And yet, that's still jarring for Willow to read for the first time. And considering what a little social media maven she is, doubtless she's seen this story several times since it first appeared online about twenty-four hours ago. It's funny, though, since back in 2000 Jada couldn't have predicted that a) the internet would be so all-consuming, b) old print articles like this would've been transcribed, and c) her daughter would command 2.6 million loyal followers.

Let this be a lesson to today's celebrity parents-to-be: Don't say anything you wouldn't want your adolescent kid to find on Google someday.

Then again, maybe Jada did have a sense of her looming responsibility:

FP: Any particularly memorable mood swings you’d like to share?

JPS: A couple of weeks ago, I suddenly got overwhelmed that I was bringing another baby into the world, all that responsibility. So I cried. But I think crying is healthy. I cry every day. To me, crying is like taking a yoga class. It keeps you in touch.

What she meant to say was, she had a vision that her fetus would someday be whipping its hair back and forth.
