The Very Worst And Very Best Dressed At The 2012 Met Gala Were Elizabeth Banks And Solange Knowles

Last night, the Costume Institute Gala at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art brought out countless celebrities vying for the title of “most cutting edge fashion plate.” Unfortunately for some, this meant being poured into avant-garde contraptions not suitable for wear by humans. Who managed to do all right, and who was a victim of their stylist's passive aggressive acting out? Click through for Crushable's picks for best and worst.

Worst Dressed

As you can see up top, Elizabeth Banks looked fairly awful. It seems like she was trying to channel her Hunger Games character Effie Trinket, but that type of thing really only works if you go full costume with it. The mixed prints are a bit loud, but they don't bother me as much as the unfortunate accents. The “capelet,” for instance, looks like one of those plastic cones you put on cats to keep them from licking their wounds after surgery. And the dust ruffle-looking thing around her waist looks like it's meant to air out her vagina and/or keep people from getting too close to it. Here it is from the side:

You can tell by her pained smile that she kind of knows she cocked up.

Best Dressed

As for best dressed, I must say I was drawn to the people who resisted the urge to wear the emperor's new clothes and kept things simple with clean lines and flattering colors. Also: those who wore clothes that suited their personalities and not the whims of some maniacal stylist. There were many people who exemplified this (Kristen Bell, Greta Gerwig and Jessica Alba, to name a few), but the one who most impressed me was Solange Knowles:

The gown, the clutch, the purse, the hair…everything's working together in harmony as beautiful as her voice! I will admit to some bias here, as I think Solange is The Coolest, but I think she's a great example of what people got right this year. The color looks really nice on her, which is impressive, as that color is yellow. She didn't overdo it on the makeup and accessories. And when was the last time you saw a beautiful, glamorous woman rocking an afro this hard on the red carpet? She's so fucking perfect I can't even look at her anymore.
