Crushable Quotable: Rooney Mara Wore A Strawberry-Blonde Merkin To Play Lisbeth Salander

In the months leading up to the release of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, we've heard all the exhaustive details of Rooney Mara‘s transformation from apple-cheeked Harvard kid to punk hacker Lisbeth Salander: Dyeing and hacking off her hair, bleaching her eyebrows, piercing her nipple, etc. Director David Fincher sure is demanding when it comes to recreating a literary character that's a) well-known from best-selling books and b) already been portrayed successfully by Noomi Rapace.

But now a new detail has emerged. Metro sat down with Rooney at the press roundtables and asked her if she or David had included any specific details about Lisbeth that they hoped fans would pick up on. Rooney confessed that she had only a “ridiculous” answer and proceeded to describe the merkin (pubic wig) that they had specially dyed to match Lisbeth's natural hair color:

There was a lot of discussion that went into my merkin for the movie, because I was naked quite a lot. And I don’t think a lot of people will notice all of the attention that went into that. But there was a lot of discussions around that…  In the book she’s meant to have strawberry-blonde hair originally and she dyes it, so we had a special merkin made that was, you know, strawberry-blonde so that it would fit.
