Restaurant’s ‘Black And Bleu’ Rihanna Sandwich Wouldn’t Be In Poor Taste If It Only Mocked Chris Brown
Usually we can appreciate a joke at a celebrity's expense, but we have to agree that it showed bad judgment for Georgia restaurant Chops & Hops to crack a joke about Rihanna‘s abuse at the hands of Chris Brown when promoting their new sandwich.
Although the steakhouse is known for naming special sandwiches after celebrities, whoever posted a photo of their latest creation to Facebook should have run his joke by his bosses before hitting enter. Here's what she/he wrote:
@chrisbrown, @rihanna and us teamed up for a award winning celebrity sandwich. Put your hands on this caribbean black and bleu sandwich. Caribbean spiced marinated sliced ribeye blackened then look out for the bleu cheese, sliced tomato, silver Lamborghini onions, and shredded romaine. Chris Brown won't beat you up for eating this unless your name starts with a R and ends with A.
After the obvious flurry of criticism from commenters, the restaurant quickly pulled the sandwich from its menu, although interestingly they kept the photo and comment thread up instead of trying to erase their mistake. They issued a separate statement on their Facebook wall, stressing that they never intended to joke about domestic violence. According to one commenter, this isn't the first insensitive post from C&H: Past sandwiches have mocked Paula Deen‘s diabetes or Britney Spears‘ crotch-flashing paparazzi photos (that one had roast beef, 'nuff said).
And honestly, my problem isn't that C&H mocked Brown's infamous post-Grammys attack on Rihanna. It's a part of pop culture that will inevitably continued to be commented on—and which shouldn't be forgotten, especially since Rihanna seems bent on self-destruction by collaborating with Brown again, and possibly restarting their relationship.
But this mean-spirited caption is unoriginal and just follows others in placing the blame for the attack on Rihanna, especially with the “Chris Brown won't beat you for eating it” part. Now, if they wanted to make a sandwich called the Talentless Prick — or whatever pun their recently-fired employee can devise — they have my blessing!
