Gallery: The ‘Overly Attached Girlfriend’ Meme Evolves Into ‘Misunderstood Girlfriend’

Misunderstood Girlfriend meme Reddit Overly Attached Girlfriend Laina Walker

The Overly Attached Girlfriend was probably our favorite internet meme of the summer: Laina Walker‘s jokey-creepy video submission for a Justin Bieber contest got appropriated by Reddit and instead became an image macro, where her wide eyes and creepy smile got matched up with hilarious captions. In the intervening months, the meme's popularity has subsided; it still pops up on some subreddits, and Laina has enjoyed a small amount of fame as people tweet at her their own instances of OAG in daily life.

But then… something crazy happened. A few days ago, a Redditor introduced a new meme to r/AdviceAnimals, called Misunderstood Girlfriend. It's a much more normal-looking photo of Laina eating an ice cream sundae, and while it starts off with a seemingly crazy act, the punchline reveals that your Misunderstood Girlfriend just wanted to make your life better. Kind of like Good Girl Gina and those memes that show that you're just way too paranoid! Just because a girl pays you some extra attention doesn't mean she wants to steal your used tissues and perform some African voodoo to make you fall in love with her.

Still, it wouldn't hurt to review our gallery and make sure you know the difference.
