The ‘McKayla Is Not Impressed’ Tumblr Is The Most Meta Thing To Come Out Of The 2012 Olympics
One of the most memorable photos from the Olympics came early this week, when American gymnast McKayla Maroney fell during the vault finals and lost out on the gold by .108 points. Standing with her silver medal, she made a major sourpuss face that she either didn't think the photographers would capture or was too pissed-off to care. Well, it took only three days for someone to create a Tumblr devoted to her pouting loss called McKayla Is Not Impressed. Like last year's Frowning Bridesmaid at the Royal Wedding, she's become a meme!
Is it me, or have the Olympics become really meta this go-round? Maybe it's because four years ago I wasn't working at a blog, and didn't have friends at sites like BuzzFeed, and .gifs hadn't become so universally used. But with the 2012 Games in London, I've seen .gif recaps, image macros, and memes come tumbling out. It's a fast and easy way to stay on top of all of the amazing feats of strength; and while some of the content is funny, a lot of it is deep and inspiring.
But for now, back to the photos that make us giggle. Nothing is quite good enough for McKayla, whether it's natural phenomena…
…or our explorations into space.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West don't do it for her:
She's underwhelmed by the new Macbook Pro:
“Girl on Fire”? Psh.
And here's where things get actually meta: Yesterday McKayla herself responded to the Tumblr! Her tweet was kind of begrudging but not an outright complaint. Of course, it's suspicious that she has since deleted it, but thankfully Mashable got a screenshot:
I wonder if she decided to distance herself from the joke for her own good, or if she has some sort of image consultants — required now that the internet is paying even more attention than ever to this year's Olympics — who forced her to pull the tweet. Either way, we're not impressed by that backslide.
