Should Your Parents Monitor You in the Car?
Your parents will know how fast you're driving, how many people are in your car, who's wearing a seatbelt, and even how loud your music is. It might sound like something straight out of a movie, but this technology is actually in the works and might accompany you on your next drive.
The Teen Driver Support System works by hooking up your smart phone to your car. The device uses a GPS system to determine the speed you are traveling. The phone will give warnings if the teen drives over a designated limit, and if the warnings are ignored, Mom will get a text message. The system will also monitor the sound in the car and figure out how many voices will speak. If the teen is violating a passenger limit, Mom will be alerted. The volume of the music can also be controlled. If the music is too loud, the device has the ability to turn off the music completely.
Max Donath and Rich Hogland, researchers who developed this program, says the device will be available in about four years. But before the device hits the market, the researchers are working on making the device hack-proof so the teens can't outsmart the device.
