Should Teens Get Laser Hair Removal?

When things get hairy (literally) it can be a pretty tough to deal with -- especially if you're a girl. What do you do when waxing, bleaching, or tweezing just isn't cutting it?

In a New York Times article, Vidya Srinivasan expressed the torment she felt because of her unwanted hair on her upper lip. After exhausting all the options, her mom and dermatologist, Dr. Hema Sundaram, gave her a few laser treatments to permanently remove the hair.

Permanent hair removal is becoming increasingly popular in the teen world. Rena Abdinova, the owner of the City Skin and Laser Clinic says, "I have a teenage client who is on the swim team and is getting hair removed from his back." Last year, teenagers got 67,523 procedures. That's more than double the number of procedure from 2000.

Laser hair removal works by beaming a light at different frequencies through the skin to kill the hair follicles. For an upper lip removal, you would need six sessions, and would cost up to $95 per session. When performed correctly, complications are rare. But, there have been cases where scarring, burns, and increasing hair growth do occur.
