Zach Gilford Says Season Five Will Be A Wrap For ‘Friday Night Lights’

All good things must come to an end — and in the case of Friday Night Lights, that end will come next year.

Sad! Zach Gilford tells Crushable that is indeed the case. The actor, who plays Matt Saracen on the cult series that's not really about football, says the show will say a bittersweet goodbye in season five (currently filming in Austin).

After an initial airing on DirectTV, the fourth season is back on NBC's Friday-night lineup. As of last week, Saracen was seen driving out of dodge and leaving¬† first love Julie (Aimee Teegarden) behind in Dylan. “He needed to get out,” Zach says.

However! Saracen IS returning to the small Texas town for the final season; it was only a week ago that Zach learned he'd be back for another round, thanks in part to popular demand (see: the Facebook campaign to get him nominated for an Emmy). Days later, he was back in Austin shooting episodes. Without giving away too much –damn! — Zach says his FNL alter ego will be instrumental in helping Julie break away from parents Coach and Tami Taylor (Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton).

Matt and Julie are the ones who always envisioned a life outside Dylan, Zach says. “Not like Riggins. He'll be there forever,” he jokes.

Cue the tears from FNL fans!¬† Since the end is near, do you — like us — have the sads?
